Where do i even begin?

Greetings.
I dont even know where to begin. I'm running windows 98 4.10.1998 on a Pentium II.
I am looking for free stuff cause i'm not gonna invest in this stupid old computer, i just want to clean it up if i can.
My computer is stuck in safe mode so i am pretty sure i am infected with something. I'm think i got it through my email, although not a 100% sure on that cause i got no clue even what i got.
I'm pretty computer illiterate, but willing to try.
A heads up on where to begin would be greatly appreciated.

hello there,
i think the best way is to post your hijackthis log. you need to download that program, run a scan, and post the copy of the results here, and a specialist will tell you which files are infected. you can download hijackthis here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html.
