After I figured out that my wife's laptop had this annoying malware with constant warnings of the other malware on my computer, I had trouble removing it.  I use spybot search and destroy, and, although it saw the problem and said it fixed it, the annoying red x and pop up windows-looking warnings continued.

After more research, found a suggestion to turn off xp's system restore.  I tried this, ran a spybot s&d scan and rebooted the PC.  Turned system restore back on.  The bad boy was GONE.
 Cheesy
So just a post incase you're having trouble removing a known and identifiable malware.

hello there,
have you tried running antispyware scan while your computer is in safe mode? this may give better results, because most of the malicious processes are inactive in a safe mode, so they don't interrupt with the scan. here's safe mode tutorial : http://www.2-spyware.com/news/post232.html
let us know if it works
