HELP! Still can't get control over my locked desktop....

I have removed all I can find of Spy Sheriff but I do not have full control over the desktop and there are some problems with typing. I removed the Desktop.html in C:\Windows to get rid of the bogus warning and can change the color of the desktop but the rest is locked. There are no web sites listed in the web tab of the properties of the desktop.

Your system is infected with the Drsmartload trojan. Please follow these steps to get rid of it:

1. Use HijackThis to fix this entry:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [drsmartloadb] c:\\drsmartloadb.exe
2. Now delete the C:\drsmartloadb.exe file. You may need to restrart your system in Safe Mode in order to be able to delete this file.

As for the complete removal of SpySheriff, do the following:

1. Launch the Registry Editor.
2. Locate the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop key and delete all its subkeys.

Please let me know if this helps.

Though I've done all you said (and there's no more "drsmartloadb.exe in my c:\" and no ACTIVEDESKTOP subkey under the Policies registry, i still cannot restoer control on my wallpaper......pls do help again :cry:

Well, your log looks clean. This means that there are some keys in the Windows registry that lock your desktop.

Please try this:
Launch the Windows registry by typing in regedit in Start > Run.... Then find the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and delete it. This should restoкe default policy settings. To apply the changes you may need to restart your computer.

As for the Windows Service Pack 2, please post here a message you're getting from the Windows Update. You can also get Windows Service Pack 2 from alternate safe resources like this one.
