I have a malware sending out emails like a machine gun!

Hi and thank you for your advice.
I let my Norton Anti-virus revewal lapse and oh boy, here they come:  I got Spy Sheriff, drsmartload1 and the Trojan Anserin almost all at once. I ran Spybot S&d, Ad Aware, New copy of Norton Anti-virus and went out and bought Spyware Doctor too.  But there is still a malware of some kind lurking on my machine.  I have a high-speed DSL connection.  When I connect, this malware starts sending out emails at about one per second, filling my desktop screen with little Norton Anti-virus boxes that attempt to scan the outgoing emails for viruses.  Naturally, it finds plenty, so it opens another box for each one saying that it can't send the email.  Some of them manage to get through the screening to the outside world. The email addresses I see go by are not from my address books.

I'm also afraid of what this malware might be sending out: my passwords and personal info. So I downloaded Hijack This and ran a log.  Copied below. Can you tell me what I've got and how to get rid of it? Thanks in advance. Ebo

Spyware Doctor has found and fixed all but one: Something called Trojan.SpamBot.  Spyware Doctor says it fixed all but one file and that I need to run in Safe Mode and run a full scan of Spyware Doctor, then re-boot in regular mode.  I did that and the SpamBot came right back and started sending emails again. Would someone please check my Hijack This log and/or tell me how to get rid of this one persistant malware?

Please run another HijackThis scan and post a fresh log here. As you said, you used Spyware Doctor to remove parasites from your system. Most of them should be removed now. That is why I need a new log.

Here's the latest logfile. But I'm not quite out of the woods yet. While Spyware Doctor showed me the location of the offending files: C:\windows\system32\drivers\i386p.sys, and C:\windows\system32\msctl32.dll, Running the Spyware Doctor in Safe Mode didn't work in deleting these files. On re-boot in normal mode, the emailer would again start its run. So I downloaded a copy of "Pocket Killbox" and was able to easily delete those two files. I should have stopped right there. But after dealing with this infection for four straight days, out of frustration, I went one step too far. I read somewhere that the process "winlogon.exe" was part of the infection. I should have read twice, clicked once, because I went ahead and had Killbox delete "winlogon.exe". About ten seconds later, my screen went black and I had to do a power shutdown. Upon restart, everything seemed normal,  the emailer was gone, but so were my two other hard drives!  In addition to C drive, I have two more hard drives on my machine: "E" and "F". The computer no longer "sees" them. I know the data is probably still there, but Windows XP doesn't display them for access. In addition, there is a blank pop-up that appears every two minutes or so, it has the Internet Explorer logo in the upper left corner and the title bar says "Advertisement" but there is nothing in the box.

It looks like few parasite components managed to survive the Spyware Doctor's scan. Namely those objects are responsible for displaying pop-ups. Please follow these steps to get rid of them:

1. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:

2. Now locate and delete the following files (you may need to use KillBox to be able to do this):
C:/secure32.html
0cw80lwc.dll


As for the winlogon.exe file, it looks like you didn't completely delete it or the system has restored it itself. Without this file your Windows XP would not start at all and you would not be able to run any programs including HijackThis. But don't worry, this process (the legitimate one) is actually running. I can see it in your log:

As for the disappeared hard drives, I think this is a hardware or software problem, which isn't caused by parasites or viruses. Please check that all your hard disks are properly connected and not disabled by BIOS.
Please tell me, how many physical hard disk devices do you have? I need this information to figure out how to recover your drives and data.

Dear GTO,  a million thank you's!  I killed all the offending entries using both Hijack This and Pocket Killbox. You are correct, the process "winlogon.exe" seems to have restored itself after being deleted. As for my disappearing hard drives, I got a little carried away and killed my RAID drivers too! I just downloaded the latest from Asus and my machine is running fine.

I can't thank you enough. I could not have found my way through all this without your expertise and advice. I'll keep this site bookmarked and check back often. Now that I know how to use Pocket Killbox and Hijack This, I feel a lot more secure surfing around the web.
