Well, I caught XP guardian on my computer sometime today.  I did as this site told me to, but I have run into a problem.
Spyware Doctor will NOT let me remove the infections unless I buy the full version.  I tried scanning with my resident Anti-Virus (AVG) but nothing cropped up.

How can I remove these files without having to buy Spyware Doctor?

Hello MiMc,

Spyware Doctor isn't free, you have to pay for it. Alternatively, you can use MalwareBytes anti-malware, but it may not detect some of the infected files just like AVG.

to MiMc and rodi:spyware doctor is free. Go to google.com and type in the search bar, google pack and download the bundled spyware doctor. I have it and it comes with and av engine and will remove.

carrmakk, yes that's the only place where you can get Spyware Doctor with Antivirus for free, but this version doesn't provide real time protection. Of course, it's a good choice anyway.

I feel a little bit peeved.
I followed all the instructions, even type the whole notepad thing in myself on my infected PC, and then doing the copying  business, to find that I can't remove xp guardian unless I pay.
I think there should be some note of that at the beginning of the instructions.

Why does my normal av program NOT detect it?

PrincessDi, what antivirus software do you have? Also note that non of the antivirus software provides 100% protection.

Hmmmm. I use AVG - the free version.
I realise they don't pick up everything but I am just wondering, like MiMc, why?

I did the hard slog, DH clicked something. Now xp guardian seems to be gone and Spy Dr seems to be doing something even though I didn't pay for it.
I'm over it now.
I spent way too many hours in an over-heated room trying to solve the issue myself and now I don't want to talk about it any more. Smiley

Thanks for your help.

PrincessDi, because such fake programs as XP Guardian change files and processes regularly.  AVG may have the first version of the rogue program in its database, but not the second one or third. It takes time to add all new version to virus database. New threats show up every day, it's hard to detect all of them even for a team.

My suggestion would be to buy a copy of Antivirus software from Future Shop or any other technology store that sells those products.

I caught Vista Guardian awhile ago, and ran Malware Bytes, but it failed to detect all infected files. However, as soon as I purchased a copy of Norton AntiVirus 2010 with anti spyware, all my problems seemed to have been resolved. (There were 2 more trojan viruses that came bundled with the rogue spyware, and a rootkit. Malware Bytes didn't find them).

Free is good; but not always the best option. Buying a legitimate copy of AntiVirus software is costy (i spent over $60), but it works well and is better than having to pay a couple hundred to get your pc fixed.

Also, with the program i have now, it protects against intrusion attempts, gives download insight, and offers browser and email protection.

So yes, i would have to say that purchasing the full version in store is probably a good idea.

Just download Malwarebytes' Anti malware. It's alot better IMO and it stays free and will always remove it for you.
heres the official site of mbam > http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Or if you know how to read HJT logs, Hijackthis would be helpful for you. Cheers buddy good luck.  Cheesy

I have avast ( 6 yrs update ) and spyware doctor installed to protect my pc since was several time attacked by spyware creep. Before this only thing that I can do is format my pc.
