Alright, so about 3 weeks ago, I woke up to find my computer had somehow contracted the "Vista Smart Security 2010" malicious anti-spyware virus.  Obviously I set out to get rid of it.

First I tried downloading Malware Bytes, but the virus wouldn't let me run the installer.

So, I tried downloading Malware Bytes on a friend's computer and transferring the full program via thumb drive.  I managed to run a system scan, and it seemed to delete some stuff.  After a few minutes, however, it became evident that the virus was still fully entrenched - security "warning" pop-ups were as frequent as ever.  However, it did start allowing me to use the internet somewhat normally (i.e. it didn't just close tabs it didn't like).

Able to access the internet fully again, I turned to Spyware Doctor.  One tutorial I read instructed me to keep a certain .reg file called "exefix" on my desktop, and then run a full scan with Spyware doctor.  Spyware doctor seemed to fix the problem, and I never needed the exefix.reg file.  After a while, however, the computer went in to a state of flux where sometimes smart security would win out and start running in the background.  One day, almost a week later, my executables gave me a prompt asking which program I'd like to run them with.  As I expected, the "exefix" registry edit fixed this problem.  Throughout this period, sometimes while I was navigating on the internet, random links would instead direct me to some site advertising fake security software.  I could go back and refresh as many times as I wanted, and that link would (say, a search result on google) would relentlessly take me to some other crap.  Yet, if I went somewhere - anywhere - else, it would behave.  If I tried the previous link a minute later, it was fine.

So where I am now:

Even after the occasional Malware Bytes scan and routine scheduled Spyware Doctor clean-ups, the virus is STILL here.  Rather than advertising rogue anti-spyware, it has the following adverse effects:

-Often, when navigating to a new website, a new tab is simultaneous tab is created advertising faux "work at home for google" crap

-Startup, and pretty much everything, is painfully slow.

The gauntlet is thrown down.  How the **** do I get rid of this thing FOR GOOD?  I'd like to note that I don't consider keeping it at bay with Spyware Doctor for all of eternity an option.  I don't want it quarantined or mostly gone - I already have control over my computer.  It's the little stuff that's driving me crazy.

Hello,

1. Download TDSSKiller tool, run it and remove found infections (if exist)
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip
2. Download SUPERAntispyware and run a full system scan
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html (free version)
3. Run HijackThis and post scan report here
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/hijackthis/HijackThis.exe

Good luck!
