Winfixer Problems

I quite apparently have had a Winfixer infection for quite some time as I get the obnoxious popup ads pushing me to buy Winfixer. I've also had some popups for buying something called SpyBloc...how is that related or is it? As well as that I've seen some 'sex buddies' 'get a date tonight' type things.

Anyways, I've gone through various methods of attempting to remove it. Scanning the computer with Ad-Aware and Counterspy came up with some Winfixer files, but the popups still remained. I have now followed both the McAfee and Symantec guides as I saw on Wikipedia for manually removing Winfixer. I deleted the winfixer folder I found, as well as all of the registry keys mentioned that I found in my computer. I found none of the Winfixer DLL's.

I was then rather thankful I had removed it and began to browse the net. Good so far...until I saw another Winfixer popup. I'm seeing them much less frequently but they're still there. I've followed all the manual removal instruction, so what do I do now?

Oh, and I almost forgot. One of the sites states a file called "df_kmd.sys" in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS folder is Winfixer related. I have a file in there called "d_kmd.sys". I don't want delete anything necessary, and a google search turned up with nothing...but could their be a relation here, and this being what is causing Winfixer to survive?

The df_kmd.sys file is actually related to the WinFixer threat. It IS NOT a system file, but a malicious parasite component and thus must be deleted immediately. If deleting df_kmd.sys will not solve your problem, please download the HijackThis program, run a system scan and post a fresh log here.

The file I have is NOT df_kmd, instead it is d_kmd. I was wondering it it were related to the df file.

Your system is infected with the Vundo trojan or some of its numerous variants. To get rid of the parasite and clean-up your system, please follow these steps:

1. Download the VundoFix.exe tool. Then double-click on the downloaded file. This will unpack VundoFix files.

2. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:

3. Now reboot your system into Safe Mode. This step is very important!

4. Once in Safe Mode, open the VundoFix folder and execute the KillVundo.bat file.
* You will be presented with a warning. At this point press enter.
* Then you will be asked to "type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff". At this point type in this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll. Press enter, then the F6 key.
* Now you should be asked to "type in the second path as instructed by the forum staff". At this point type in this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vybeg.*. Press enter, then the F6 key. Press enter one more time. Now the fix should run.

5. Make sure that the C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll file does not exist. If it is present, delete it.

6. After you get done, restart your computer, run another HijackThis scan and post a fresh log here.


As for the d_kmd.sys file, I think that it is malicious too. It is definitely not a system file.

OK, so it all worked fine, no popups...until I started up my computer today, and now it won't start Windows, saying the system32 folder is corrupt. It would seem I have done something wrong. Do I have any option to fix this?

Yes, you have.

* Insert the Windows XP installation CD and set your computer to use the CD or DVD drive as primary boot device. This can be done from the BIOS configuration utility. Please check your system documentation for information on how to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

* Boot your computer. You should see the Welcome to Setup screen. Press enter to select the option To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. Do NOT select the repair using Recovery Console (another option)!

* Accept the license agreement. Select the Windows XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. This will restore all system essential files.

* Restart your computer. Do not press any keys to boot from CD! The Windows setup will continue repairing the system.

Please note that this procedure will NOT remove all your settings, installed software, etc.
