Please follow these steps in order to get rid of the infection:

1. Uninstall the SurfMonkey program. It is adware!
Navigate to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or remove programs. Within the list of installed software find SurfMonkey and click Uninstall or Change/Remove. Wait until the uninstall is finished.

2. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:

3. Delete the following file. You may need to restart your system into Safe Mode or use the KillBox utility to be able to remove this file.

4. Kill the following process and delete the corresponding file (you may need to use KillBox):

5. After you get done, run another HijackThis scan and post your fresh log.


P.S. Your system is outdated. Please install Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows XP and Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also apply all latest updates and official patches.

Please follow these steps:

1. Terminate the following process (learn how to do this)
C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe

2. Open the C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey folder and try to find an uninstaller. If you cannot find any, try deleting the entire folder.

3. As for the desktop hijack, please try this:
* Click the Start button. Then launch the Run... tool.
* Within the appeared window type regedit and press enter. This will open the Registry Editor.
* Now locate the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and delete all its subkeys.
* Restart your computer.

Thank you for all of your help. I tried to delete the file the way that you told me,but it didn't work. However, I did find another way and I would like to share it with you for future references. I went START-CONTROL PANEL-APPERANCE-DISPLAY-DESKTOP-CUSTOMIZE-WEB-NEW-BROWSE-C:DRIVE-WINDOWS-then I clicked on an active desktop file named adw.htm- I deleted that file, changed desktops-restarted my pc and like magic it was gone.
