The lsass.exe file is not necessarily related to spyware or viruses. It can also be an essential system component. If you are running Windows XP, the legitimate lsass.exe file should be in C:\WINDOWS\System32. For Windows 2000 its default location is C:\WINNT\System32. If the file's location is different in your case, you have an infection. Please provide more details on that file and your system.

Hi... i have a somewhat similar problem so I didn't bother posting a new thread...

In my case its C:\WINDOWS\system\lsass.exe (file missing)   is this harmful?

I tried fixing it with Hijackthis and then restarted in safe mode but when I use killbox it says that the file doesn't exist... and therefore I can't seem to get rid of it.

Hi, Brimstone.

The C:\WINDOWS\System\lsass.exe is harmful. It is related to certain malicious parasites. It is not a part of the Windows operating system.

However, HijackThis says that file is missing. This means that there is no such file anymore. The only thing that left is a registry key associated with the file. The key is harmless, if the file is not present.
