Spywarestrike Blockable with Avast (FREE!!!) anti-virus

I have 1 pc primarily used for most of my online work and I happened to have just installed Avast virus protection, which I do every week or so because it is great for removing viruses (it restarts the pc and scans system during boot / before operating system is loaded0. It is very good at detecting and removing viruses, worms and T-horses. Best of all its FREE.
    I've never been "big" on using virus protection because they slow down the system and often  cause problems. So I usually remove it after I use it once. BUT yesterday before I got around to un-installing it, I went on line briefly and I got a serious looking alarm with a trojan horse warning and virus detected. I followed instructions and got rid of them. about 5 minutes later, I used my other pc (without protection) to look up something online and BAM the virus from hell hit me.
   I.E. wont start unless its in safe mode and it has been hyjacked by our wonderful friend 'about blank'   Also spywarestrike keeps starting and I got that damn unending, ungoddly taskbar warning.
   Last time I got about blank I used cwshredder and ran Avast and it got rid of it but this time its not that easy...but I'll get rid of it.
   But I am now re-thinking my stance on virus protection

And the good news is that AVAST is keeping my 1 pc safe... So I thought I'd pass that of information on,
