My counterspy 1.5 has informed me that I am infected with the Gromozon trojan at windows32\lpt4.ago When I try to remove it and reboot it reappears. I cannot say that I have noticed any changes in the smooth running of my system. The Prevx Gromozon Rootkit Removal Tool did not show up any problems and running adaware personal, spybot and avg antispyware showed no problems. No new network account has been created, which is apparently one of the symptoms of this particular trojan.
My hijackthis log is as follows:

Hello, visitor!
The Hijack This log analyzer has analyzed your log. Please take a closer look on the results.
Your system seems to be infected with malicious parasites. Please follow the steps below in order to eliminate the infection and clean up your computer.
1. Download the Pocket KillBox utility. You will need it later to delete parasite-related files and folders.
2. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:
O2 - BHO: HelperObject Class - {00C6482D-C502-44C8-8409-FCE54AD9C208} - C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 8\SnagItBHO.dll
3. The following entries are not malicious, but some of them are not used anymore. You may use HijackThis to fix a few of them. However, please keep in mind that some of the entries marked as Questionable or Not Needed are fully legitimate and might be required by installed software to work properly, while some others might be related to certain parasites. It is up to you to decide whether you need any of them, or not.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent
O4 - Global Startup: BTTray.lnk = ?

4. Now restart your system in Safe Mode. This step is very important!
5. Use the Pocket KillBox utility to delete the following files:
C:\Program Files\TechSmith\SnagIt 8\SnagItBHO.dll
The following files and Windows registry entries are marked as "unknown". Currently, the HijackThis Log Analyzer cannot provide required information on these items. The files and entries in the list below can be both malicious and fully legitimate. Because of this, please do not take any action! Wait for the forum responders or other forum users to provide you with necessary details and further instructions.

O23 - Service: ServiceLayer - Nokia. - C:\Program Files\Common Files\PCSuite\Services\ServiceLayer.exe
After going through all the steps, run another HijackThis scan and post a fresh log to the HijackThis analyzer. It is possible that some parasites your system was infected with were not removed completely and may restore themselves later.

Thank you for using the 2-Spyware.com HijackThis log analyzer! |

Hi Dipity. Welcome to the 2-Spyware.com forums!
Your log looks clean. However, sometimes it doesn't reveal the infection.
Please provide the exact path of that file. Did you mean C:\WINDOWS\System32? Windows32 is not a system folder. |

Thanks GTO.
Yes I did mean C:\windows\system32\lpt4.ago
I cannot locate the file manually and assume it is hidden.
Could counterspy be giving a false positive?
Many regards

Hi Dipity
This might be a false positive. And most likely it is. A new version of CounterSpy is available - 2. I recommend updating and scanning once again. |

Thanks again GTO.
I have already asked sunbelt/counterspy what existing subscribers need to do in order to upgrade as it's not clear from the site.
I'll get back if anything untoward happens with the alleged trojan..
Apprecaite the help.
Best wishes

Have also seen this found on a number of PC's around our global locations.
To me this does indeed look like a false-positive!
Looking forward to the further progress of this case. |

Hi again.
More evidence of a false positive: I've now upgraded to the latest version of counterspy (2.1.906) and the Gromozon alert has gone.
Best wishes

Sunbelt confirmed to me:
*quote*
The Trojan.Gromozon detection is an erroneous, phantom detection -- meaning that the file lpt4.ago is not really on your system and that you are not at risk from the Gromozon Trojan. This phantom detection is being produced by an odd interaction between a file trace in our database and a little known aspect of the Windows file system.
You can safely ignore this detection, which will be removed in the next update to CounterSpy's definitions.
*quote end*
I guess Sunbelt will soon be posting this as a known "false-positive to ignore" on their website (http://support.sunbelt-software.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/std_alp.php) to properly close this little issue.
(Considering strongly Microsoft Forefront technology). |

Thanks for the update slemmesmi!
What worried me was that it kept reappearing after a reboot, which was consistent with the way in which an embedded trojan works. Weird that a 'phantom' file should be quarantined.
