Hello good people ,

I have spyware/virus problems on my home computer. I use PCcillan, but it obviously hasn't helped in this situation. The last time I used PCcillan's offshore support team, it took weeks to bridge the communication gap and get a solution, so I thought I would try this (very admirable) site.

Here are some symptoms I currently have on my computer:
-Slow/sluggish performance, takes forever to open/reboot.
-General (vague) virus alerts from PCcillan. One file captured in quarantine was called "func.exe."
-PCcillan full (40 minute) virus scan finds 0 viruses. PCcillan spyware scan only finds Web site cookies.
-When I tried to use PCcillan in Safe Mode, I got error messages--wouldn't open.
-As soon as I launch Internet Explorer, pop-ups begin opening, advertising a variety of products, including (obviously bogus) spyware.
-Some of these pop-up windows go dead when I try to close them, remaining open until I reboot.

When I tried to download Spybot and AdAware (free versions) on the problem computer at home, it kept locking up. So I have downloaded them to my work computer and plan to copy them over tonight. Then I hope to run them in Safe Mode.

Following is my log file from Hijakthis. Look forward to any help I can get.

Hi buddyglass_00. Welcome to the 2-Spyware.com forums!

Please follow these steps:

1. Download Pocket KillBox or KillBox utility.

2. Use HijackThis to fix the following entries:
O3 - Toolbar: Nick Aracde Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-9EB4-FE6FA694B13E} - C:\PROGRA~1\NICKAR~1\NICKAR~1.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{78-8F-FC-C1-ZN}] C:\windows\system32\npdsrego.exe CHD003
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [runner1] C:\WINDOWS\retadpu1000106.exe 61A847B5BBF72813329B385772FF01F0B3E35B6638993F4661AA4EBD86D67C56389B284534F310
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ExploreUpdSched] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwinqodt.exe CHD003
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ApachInc] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\pjicmcus.dll",realset
O4 - Startup: Think-Adz.lnk = C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3648711193-2532673972-307841729-1006\Dc13.xls

3. Now restart your system in Safe Mode. This step is very important!

4. Once in Safe Mode, use either Pocket KillBox or KillBox to delete the following files:
C:\windows\system32\npdsrego.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\rwinqodt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pjicmcus.dll
C:\WINDOWS\retadpu1000106.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\NICKAR~1\NICKAR~1.DLL
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3648711193-2532673972-307841729-1006\Dc13.xls

Also, delete the following directories:
C:\PROGRA~1\NICKAR~1
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3648711193-2532673972-307841729-1006

5. Reboot and download CCleaner. Run this program.

6. After you get done, run new HijackThis scan and post a fresh log here.

Thanks for your help!

Exception to your instructions: Out of all the items you told me to delete with killbox, only found the nickarcadestuff (deleted with no problems). All else was gone.

Everything else went as you specified.

When I opened Explorer to post this reply, PCcillan popped up with a warning message about "func.exe" malware again. Deleted it from quarantine.

Then I got 3-4 pop-ups as I typed this.

Following is the latest hijackthis log file. Thanks again! -buddyglass_00

Sometimes HijackThis gets rid of those files all by itself.

Your last HijackThis log doesn't indicate any infection, so you should try scanning with other security software. Please do this:

1. Use Kaspersky Online Scanner to scan your system for viruses.

2. Then download the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware. Install the program, update its definitions and run a complete system scan.

Let me know if this works.

Kaspersky: Ran it a few times, but my computer kept overheating and shutting down before completion.

SUPERantispyware: Installed and ran successfully. Found and removed about 140 "threats."

Also installed SpyBot. Couldn't complete a scan due to overheating and shutdown.

Also installed Lavasoft Ad-Aware, ran, detected and removed about 30 items.

However... still when I open browser, immediately get 2-3 extra windows opening, trying to get me to click something. After I close them all, no more problems for a while, then more popups later, including messages that an agent wants to have an online session with me to discuss my insurance---crazy!

So all I know to do now is give you another HijackThis log file. Thanks again for your help.

Hi again,

Did the HijackThis fixes, removed the dll file, which did exist.

Opened up Explorer and more windows popped open. I wrote down some addresses this time; these are sites that have come up

numerous times before:

screensavers.com
count1.exitexchange.com
imsafer.com

Then I checked and wrote down plug-ins in three of the drop-down categories:

One more thing. After my last post, PCcillan popped up a warning that the following could not be quarantined or deleted:

XML_HACK.OL

Thanks again. buddyglass_00

Hi buddyglass_00

Can you provide the full list of software installed to your system?

I do not see any signs of this infection Sad

GTO,

What's the best way to log all software on my system?

Also, FYI, I went to http://forums.spywareinfo.com and followed their basic steps of things to check before posting a problem. It included using some different detection software.

This included Ewido AVG Spyware and Spybot (I got it to run this time without overheating). Found lots more malware.

When I ran Spybot, found lots of things related to smitfraud. Was able to remove all but one, which was named something like smitfraud.coresystem.

After I did all that, still had following symptoms:

Still have constant windows opening for addresses such as:

jack9.com
cpvfeed.com
screensavers.com
count1.exitexchange.com
ezango.com
pcsecurityshield.com
amidrenpromo.com

PCcillan still occasionally prompting with quarantine messages for:

func.exe
movie[1].qtl
xml_hack.ao

And finally, here is my most recent HijackThis log file. Thanks. -buddyglass_00

Hi buddyglass_00

Malware attempts to compromise your system with the XML_HACK.AO exploit. I believe pop-ups that you get have this exploit inside them. But I cannot see anything causing pop-ups.

You should try running the VundoFix.exe removal tool. See if this works.

I am having the SAME problem. I randomly get popups for ebay and other shopping browsers whenever I search the net. Prevx 2.0 registers this as FUNC.exe and attempts to remove it. However, it never gets rid of it as after rebooting, the same things occur.

Well, I gave up. Had to have my computer back, so I formatted the hard disk and reintalled the original factory image.

I appreciate all the help I received from GTO nonetheless.

Best regards. buddyglass_00 Wink
