About 2 days ago when my dad was using the computer, he somehow got the computer infected with spyware and so far I have been unable to get rid of it. I'm not sure if this type of spyware is common or not, but I will give you a description. In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, there is sometimes a red stop sign with an "X" in the center of it. Sometimes, the spyware takes over my desktop and puts its own background on the desktop. The desktop is red, has a biohazard sign in the center of it, and below it it say "Download spyware protection software now" (something like that). I frequently get small windows that say "Windows security alert" and say that someone just tried to hack into my computer. After I close out of those windows, an internet explorer window pops up and takes me to some anti-spyware site. I already tried using norton antivirus 2006 (updated), lavasoft 2007 and spybot search and destroy, but the last 2 have only removed small bits and pieces of the spyware. When I started my computer up in safe mode, I did not get any of the spyware pop ups. I use windows xp home edition. Norton has not detected anything at all. I know that this spyware has embeded itself into the windows files. Does anyone know how to remove this type of spyware without installing a fresh copy of xp?

Just remember that lavasoft and spybot already removed portions of it. As a result, the 3 icons don't work, but my computer is still slow and messages continue to pop up. Here is the log file

4.Download Smitrem. While in Safe mode, extract smitrem, then run RunThis, let the program do it's work, after it's done restart it normally.

5.Download the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware. Install the program, update its definitions and run a complete system scan.

6. After you get done, restart your computer, run new HijackThis scan and post a fresh log here.

It looks like your instructions did the trick. No more crappy pop ups. Here is the latest HijackThis log file. I just wanted to ask you if it was normal for spybot to keep popping up during that entire process. When I was fixing the items with hijackthis, spybot kept popping up asking me if I should allow the changes or not, and I allowed them. Is that how it was supposed to be?

The spyware is gone, but for some reason Spybot search and destroy keeps popping up in small windows saying that an important registry entry was changed. The exact same one continues to come up. The category is "shell services". It says that a value was added, and the entry is msmdev. Why does it keep doing that?

2. After you get done, restart your computer, run new HijackThis scan and post a fresh log here.


P.S. Im not sure why it's doing that But my guess it's the firewall enabled from Spybot.
Also the registy, you might want to try and download CCleaner, delete all the cookies, temp files, then do a registy search and fix all that's missing.

I also have this problem !!!!! its a Knightmare - Have scanned using Mcafee, Spybot and Adware7, but still running dog slow and getting alot of warning that my PC is under attack (even tho I have disconnected the Broadband).
I think it has something to do with some website called safewebnavigate.com
I am just trying some basic cleanups and scans and then I shall try and use HijackThis

I am having the same problem as mikekazik1...annoying pop-up in toolbar, that says something about system alert...(probly got it from some adult site..lol) So could someone who knows about these things please help me...the spyware is really driving me nuts, been trying to scan it with spyware doctor and norman, but nothing...thanks for advance...
