hello there,
there are two free ways to delete antivirus 2008: delete it manually and scan a computer with free antispyware. here's a manual antivirus 2008 removal tutorial. and here are some free antispyware tools. running antispyware is the easier way as you only need to install it and click the 'scan' button, on the other hand, no antispyware is perfect and by using manual removal you can be sure that each file is removed.
good luck

Guys,

Desperate newbie here..

I also have a "Antivirus2008 Pro" infection, but this seems to be a lot more sneaky than normal..

I have the following set of problems.

1. The Start menu has been modified (presumably by the virus) so that I can't launch most programmes including "Run" and "My computer".

2. It won't let me install new antivirus proigrammes, I've tried several, but they all open up a DOS window, then close again without installing. The CD drive is also unusable since the infection.

3. I've followed the manual removal instructions on this site, but none of the files are found in a search, and I also can't see the Registry entries that should be there. I can't stop the processes because it says "the administrator has disabled Task Manager". I presume the virus has done this.

4. I have the free version of AVG , which scans ok and says no problems (but there obviously is, because I get constant popups and demands for additional downloads from the Antivirus 2008 site) .

It seems that the virus has all my options covered such that I can't do anything about it.....can anyone help?

hello there,

it seems like antvirus2008pro is blocking security tools and some activities on your computer. you can trick it by starting your computer in safe mode, here's safe mode tutorial : http://www.2-spyware.com/news/post232.html
you should be able to access all the things that are blocked in normal mode. try to download malware bytes antimalware download here : http://www.2-spyware.com/review-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html

let us know hoe things go

Bobby, Thanks gor getting back so quickly....

I have tried Safe mode, and in Administrator, "run" and "my computer" are available (these don't appear in my own profile).

I tried running bytes antimalware, and Spyware doctor, but I get the same problem....a Dos window opens up then closes again....then nothing.

I guess Antivirus2008 is blocking the executable somehow.....

Is there anythiong else I can do before giving up and re-installing windows?

Thanks again

hello again,
don't give up yet. download hijackthis : http://www.2-spyware.com/review-hijackthis.html and post your log on forum section dedicated to hjt logs analyze : http://www.2-spyware.com/forum/forum8
hijackthis application logs every running process and this helps to find which processes are bad ones.

OK, I'm a bit further on, but not out of the woods yet....

I can't get anything to run in my own profile, because all menu options that allow programmes to run have been deleted by the virus. Also, I can't run as Admiministrator because Task manager and "Change user" are also missing...

I can run as Administrator in Safe mode, but as wery little is running in the background in Safe mode, I figured a Hijackthis scan wouldn't reveal much about my infection.

So.....I tried running SDFix in safe mode and it actually ran! This was the first "Anti-virus-type" programme that has managed to run for nearly a week now, so I was really pleased that I had some progress of a sort..

SDFix identified several Trojans and then re-booted in normal mode into my profile. The PC's behaviour is now far more usable, with only the occasional popup asking me to update Antivirus2008, which I can just cancel. This is a LOT better than before, when popups happened evert few seconds, and my broadband was almost unusable.

My main worry is that I still haven't got most of my startup menu items, such as "Run" and "My computer" (and orthers). Would it be easier to delete my profile and create another one? Presumably the new profile would have all the missing menu items on it?

Anyway, I have run a Hijackthis scan in my present situation and will try posting it to http://www.2-spyware.com/forum/forum8 .......

Thanks for all the help.....I'm sure I am a lot nearer a fix now.
