Hi, I am new to these forums.

I was viewing a website today when suddenly my McAfee (with up-to-date DATs) notified me that it had found a trojan horse called exploit.wmf. I googled this and read about it. McAfee tells me it can't delete the file, yet the virus scan does not turn up anything. The file name is UWh2N......impossibly long...UVn[1].wmf

I ran a search on Windows and it found only a shortcut with the file name noted above. I deleted that. I deleted all my cookies from today. I downloaded spyware doctor and once McAfee is finished running, I will run that.

Is that enough to get rid of this trojan horse? Could it be that I was not even infected with it in the first place? Another message board is telling me the only way to get rid of a trojan horse is to reinstall my operating system, which I can't even do since I bought my laptop with it preinstalled. And one last question, I use my neighbor's wlan to access the internet (we have an agreement). Since it went over his connection, is he at risk at well, or will this only affect my local computer?

The WMF exploit is not a parasite itself. It is used by other threats to drop malware to your system. That .wmf file really is a trojan. However, it only downloads other parasites. Please obtain the HijackThis program, run a system scan and post a fresh log here. It will tell me whether your system is infected with any parasites or not.

You do not have to reinstall your system in order to remove the trojan. Most antivirus programs are able to get rid of it. The prevention is also quite simple. Just install all latest Microsoft updates including the WMF vulnerability fix. You will never get infected again.

Your log looks clean to me . It sounds like McAfee has blocked and removed a trojan. Your system wasn't affected.

However, it is not up-to-date. I highly recommend installing Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Windows XP and Service Pack 2 for Microsoft Internet Explorer. Also apply all latest updates and security fixes.

I updated with Service Pack 2 about a year ago but had so many problems with slow performance, crashes, etc. so I took it back off. I already ran the Windows patch for this particular problem, and you are right, I need to get the other patches as well.
