I am a manager of an IT department of my company. Recently we purchased several completely new desktops and replaced the old ones with them. Our old PCs work just fine, but we don't need them anymore and therefore would like to sell them. However, there is one problem. Old machines were used to store valuable documents of our company. We've just formatted their hard drive but I know that data can be still restored. One of my colleagues suggested using special software designed to unrecoverably erase data from a hard disk. But I don't remember how this software is called. So, any similar tools there? Maybe there are some free programs?

The most easiest way to wipe all the data from your disk is to use the disk manufacturer's "zero-write utility". This would be enough unless your disk was full of secret government documents  . |

I used DBan (aka Darik's Boot and Nuke) for the same purpose. This tool is very easy to use and doesn't depend on any operating system, as it runs from a startup floppy, CD or flash disk. DBan is free to use. Download it here. |

You should try Acronis Drive Cleanser. This piece of software really works and guarantees the complete destruction of data on entire disk. It supports all known operating systems. On its web page you can learn what data destruction standards it is compatible with.
Acronis Drive Cleanser is commercial. It costs $45, but I think that a trial version should be fully operational.
