I downloaded emule last night and ended up downloading Bactera too. I manually deleted all the files it had downloaded (more than 1000) in the windows/temp/bactera folder it created for itself, I deleted the "fake" ANTIVIR and the two "fake" back-up programmes it had installed in Windows and of course uninstalled emule and stopped the 2 "fake" ANTIVIR which were running through task manager.

Norton finds nothing, nor does AdAware SE but AVG has found 4 "potenial threats" in Windws.system/restore.ins and Windows/restore.ins (I only wrote two down but there seem to be duplicate files from what I recall). I did an online Mcafee scan which confirms the same (but only 2 files show). Can't install Mcafee to delete/fix files as I would have to uninstall NAV first, which I don't want to do if I can help it. AVG couldn't heal the files as they are embedded files.

I don't know that much about the inner workings of PCs and daren't even open the registry never mind delete files etc. I have saved a hijack this log and hope that someone could have a look and give me some pointers as to what to do as I haven't a clue at this stage. I just reinstalled windows last week after a trojan lowe zones attack which left my pc in a pityful state and really don't want to go throught that again!!

Here is my hijack this file - if anyone has any info on what I should do, it would me much appreciated.

(I'm running windows xp, sp2)

Hi, jester. Welcome to 2-Spyware.com forums!

Please post full HijackThis log. You have to include the header, which should look similarly to this:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 5:19:11 PM, on 3/4/2006
Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)

I cannot help you without having your full log, as you may run an outdated version of HijackThis, etc.

Thanks GTO,

Here is the full file. I have AVG on the pC (although it's disabled). Since I last posted, I worked up some courage and deleted a file called hkey_current_user\software\vb and vba program settings\bactera via regedit. I also deleted two infected files via AVG virus vault. I'd transferred them in to heal but the heal functionality didn't appear so I got brave and deleted them. The other two PS.Kills are still there in the restore folders.

Hi, jester.

Your last log looks clean to me. However, you should fix the following entries:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = XXXXXXX
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ClickMe] C:\apps\ClickMe\ClickMe.exe

These are quite suspicious.

Then delete the following files (if they are present in your system):
C:\bac.exe
C:\bac2.exe
C:\AntiVirScan.exe

Also delete the entire C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Bactera folder.

Post Post subject: Hello and thanks for getting back to me Reply with quote

I'd already deleted the ACTIVIR and bac files (they were what alerted me to the fact that something was wrong - I'd only just reinstalled windows so my PC was virtually clean when all of a sudded these files apperared on C drive). I plucked up the courage to use regedit (never used before as never had the need and was wary of microsofts warning - do not touch if you do not know what you're doing) and did a search for bactera (one large file found in the VA VB Connecetions containing PS.KILL, ACTIVIR etc) and EMULE (one file found although I removed emule from the pc days ago. I deleted both but the pskill still showed in the restore folders. I did scans with system restore on and then system restore off and the PS KILL just disappeared! Not sure what I did right but I did smthg right as PSKill has gone.

I fixed the proxy settings you pointed out but leaft the read me file as this is a Hewlett Packard info file.

Thanks for your help - I'm glad that the HJ log was clean and that there was nothing else lurking in my PC...
