Jeffrey A. Kilbride and James R. Schaffer, who purchased e-mail addresses and then sent the owners of those addresses tons of unsolicited messages (600,000 in nine months of 2004) with links to pornographic websites, were prosecuted in Phoenix last week and were sentenced to more than five years in federal prison. Also, the men were ordered to forfeit $1,3 million.
The charges included conspiracy, fraud, money laundering and transportation of obscene materials. The sentence followed as part of the first prosecution under a federal anti-spam law.
Kilbride and Schaffer, both 41, are said to have earned more than $2 million in commissions in the time of four years, based on the number of people who accessed the website through the spam messages.
