Spam keeps up with recent events

Olympic Games and all the topics related to Olympics draw readers’ attention quickly. What countries chose to boycott? What’s happening in Tibet? What had Dalai Lama said in the newest interview? Would you open Olympics themed newsletter even though you hadn’t subscribed it? MessageLabs have reported increasing number of Olympics related attacks spreading via email.

“Current news” spam is not a new thing; however recent attacks are exceptional because of their complexity. The email messages seem to be legitimate, but that’s not the main power of these attacks as most of malicious email messages pretend to be genuine. Olympics themed attacks are targeted, which means a message looks like it was dedicated for you. This trick appeals to many so spam messages are more likely to be opened and they have more chances to infect computers. According to several reports, recent Olympic Games spam wave targeted official bodies at government and military.
