Malware statistics of August 2008 by Kaspersky Security Network

Kaspersky Security Network technology has been active for more than two months now; it gathered interesting information at the time.

The statistics of August and July are very different, although the most widespread parasite (Trojan.Win32.DNSChanger.ech) remained the same. August was a good period for trojan-downloaders as bunch of totally new parasites of this type occupied 6 positions at top 10 of detected infections. The situation in top 20 is a bit different as several adware programs appeared among trojans and trojan-downloaders. The creators of malware apparently weren’t lazy last moth as 16 out of 20 most widespread infections were totally new ones.

While four types of malware and potentially unwanted applications were detected by Kaspersky Security Network in July, only various trojans (80%) and adware (20%) were found on computers in August. KSN detected 28940 different malwares last month; the number increased by more than 8000 since July.

The report by Kasperky company accentuated the danger of trojan downloaders as they can install additional malwares if they aren’t blocked at the right time. Security experts also pointed at BHO (browser helper objects) being large part of adware. This can easily be explained by the popularity of Internet Explorer, because BHO are designed to work attached to IE web browser.
