A lot of people, which systems recently got infected with SpywareQuake, SpyFalcon, SpywareStrike or SpyAxe wonder, how this could happen. They didn’t download any malicious software, didn’t visit adult web sites, etc. But how parasites get into your computer?
The answer is simple. Have you ever downloaded any codecs for Windows Media Player? If so, then there is a huge possibility that those codecs have infected your computer with the infamous parasites.
Beware of fake, malicious codecs! Emcodec (eMedia Codec), Vcodec and a number of others become more and more popular. Inexperienced users download and install them in order to enhance Windows Media Player. However, neither Emcodec nor Vcodec do what intended. These rogues actually infect your system with parasites like SpywareQuake.

That is how they got me. It seemed so logical at the time! After all I was just trying to improve my Windows Media Player…If you want to do that go to Microsoft and ask for the latest updates, duh?!

They got me the same way. I was fooled into thinking I needed an extra codec for viewing a particular movie, and then I tried viewing it again, and it wouldn’t view. By the time I noticed something was wrong, SpyFalcom had already attacked. I got rid of what I could, but I’m still stuck with that annoying falsified “Your system is infected” icon. It’s driving me nuts.

File-Zilla had me instal Media-Codec 4.0. That’s when I noticed Spy Quake. The instructions on how to remove aren’t complete. The Spy Quakers must have updated the .dll, services, and registry values, cuz most of them aren’t showing on my computer. As a side note, Ad-Aware SE didn’t remove it on reboot like it said. Now I have other system issues, like windrv.exe errors that won’t go away.

Well, it appears that since C: is not my system patition, that this crap didn’t fully install. WinDRV is another spyware application and since C: is my little flash card, I was spared a bigger hit.
