What is Gabest Media Player Classic?

Simply Gabest Media Player, as you can see from the title, is a media player which plays audio and video files. However, we recommend thinking you twice before installing it. No, this application itself is not considered dangerous or malicious. However, it may be filled with corrupted files, especially if you download it not from its official website, but from third-party websites. The official page of this program is mpc-hc(dot)org, so you should rely only this site. Here, it is stated that: “MPC-HC is an extremely light-weight, open source media player for Windows. It supports all common video and audio file formats available for playback. We are 100% spyware free, there are no advertisements or toolbars.” However, if you have just downloaded the Gabest Media Player not from its official site, there is a big chance that you installed a bundled program with it. It has been reported that there are tens of different extensions or plug-ins that are spread alongside Gabest Media Player virus. As a result, you should shortly start noticing various random ads and banners popping up on your browser window. Another potential danger about this program is that it is often infected with additional apps that belong to cybercriminals. They can not only try to steal your confidential data. They can also use it for their own needs. So, there is no doubt that you should remove this potential danger from your computer as soon as possible. For that, we advise you to install this reputable anti-spyware: Reimage. This program is completely safe and it is created to detect and wipe out dangerous applications from any computer.

How can Gabest Media Player Classic hijack my computer?

Gabest Media Player can be easily downloaded from its official website or other third-party website. This application may also appear on your computer if it was bundled with other freeware you downloaded off the web. Bundling is a questionable marketing method, which is used to promote questionable applications, like adwares, browser hijackers and similar PUPs. The developers of freeware rarely inform users about extra files that will be installed on their computers in a bundle. That’s why you should always monitor their installation. Beware that the player that is spread thru the official website ofSimply Gabest Media Player is not classified as a potentially dangerous program (PUP). If you downloaded it from other websites, you probably received an infected file, which may collect your personal information, things you search, your browser history, downloads and much more. If you wish to prevent this in the future, please always pay attention when you install suspicious applications to your computer. During the installation process, be considerate and look closely at the settings of the installation. Always choose the “Advanced” or “Custom” options. Uncheck all the boxes suggesting to install additional programs, plug-ins and browser extensions. However, even if the official page states that it is completely harmless and safe to use Gabest Media Player Classic, we recommend choosing a more reliable and safe alternative media player.

You got it all wrong, mate. Windows Media Player has such program too, it looks the same, it uses the same icon. But no, Gabest Media Player Classic is something else, ok?

This is a real problem. It somehow got on one of our projection computers. It keeps us from being able to play certain video files with our projection software and the only way to completely get rid of it is to reinstall our computers operating system 🙁

  • guest0024t5

Its just a lightweight, freeware media player ffs. Completely benign. Ive been using it for years. Its designed to look like an older version of Windows Media Player (v6 I think), but with the added ability to play just about any video/audio type.

It is often included with codec packs like Ffdshow and (I think) KLite – so if youre illiterate enough not to actually look at what youre installing before blindly click-spamming “agree-next-next-next-finish-booyah-Icanhasvirus” then perhaps a computer isnt for you.

If it somehow got onto your computer, its because YOU werent paying attention. This program is NOT a virus or any other kind of malware.

It must be bad!! It only plays crap on my laptop!!
I deleted it and a voice said “Thank You”, now switch to VLC which said that that stands for Very Likely Crap…

There seems to be some confusion here. The malware “Gabest Media Player Classic” is in no way related to the excellent media player of similar name. To verify this, I removed all registry keys and values related to Gabest, and every file related to it that I could find on my computer. Media Player Classic was in no way affected by any of this. So feel free to rain fiery death upon everything Gabest; MPC will still work fine, and is not the cause of any problems.

On a side note, Gabest appears to be some sort of trojan that starts up IE processes, probably to download more malware. I would recommend removing it with the malwarebytes software, as that worked for me. Still have to manually remove the registry entries and the various directories it puts into your system though.
