Help! I cannot open my files anymore. I can see a suspicious .html file that displays a message from “NANOLOCKER,” which says that I must pay a particular amount of money to get some ‘decryption key.’ What happened to my files? What is that? A virus?

NanoLocker – a new malicious ransomware

NanoLocker virus is a typical ransomware variant that enters computer systems as a Trojan horse and then blocks any security software that is installed on the computer. What this malicious computer threat does is that once installed, it scans the victimized computer system and searches for files with particular file extensions. Then it starts to encrypt user’s personal data including video, audio, text, image files, also archives and other data types. This virus uses the AES-258 algorithm to lock the files so you cannot access them anymore. In addition to that, it is believed that this virus is capable of detecting and destroying Volume Shadow copies and backups, which makes it harder to recover the encrypted files.

NanoLocker malware attack leaves a threatening message

TAKE NOTE that when ransomware encrypts the files, it might be IMPOSSIBLE to get them back!

You should know that ransomware viruses usually encrypt the files, leave the modified copies of them and delete the original files. The only way to decrypt these files is to use a decryption key, which, according to the Nano Locker cyber-criminals, you can get when you pay the ransom to them. The ransom must be paid via the BitCoin system. However, computer experts advise you NOT TO PAY the ransom! Remember that you are dealing with hideous cyber-criminals – do you really trust that they will not steal your money and leave you WITHOUT your files after all?

You can fully recover your files if you have an external drive with backup copies of your records. If not, it is going to be very hard to get your files back. You can try to decrypt your files using one of the following tools – Kaspersky virus-fighting utilities, R-Studio, or Photorec, but the first thing that you need to do is to terminate the virus and all of its malicious files from your PC. For that, you can use the manual removal guide, which is provided on page 2. Alternatively, you can use anti-malware software like Reimage. Such software can discover numerous computer threats and remove them for good.

How is this virus spread?

You should know that the only way to prevent data encryption is to follow some safe-browsing rules. Such malicious infections are mostly distributed via fraudulent e-mail letters, which appear to be safe, but in reality, such letters hold malicious attachments that might look like .docx, .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pdf, .rar or .zip file. DO NOT open e-mail letters from unknown senders!

You should always stay away from suspicious links on the Internet. Be mindful and avoid browsing insecure websites as well; it would be the best if you would avoid clicking on suspicious pop-up windows, or intrusive banner ads with eye-catching slogans. Keep in mind that many ads can be deceptive and cause sneaky redirects to unsafe web sources. You should especially avoid exploring ads in adult content or gambling websites.

Hi, which anti-malware program is the best for Mac computers? Heard rumours that they are very vulnerable to various infections, am I right?

    • tracy

webroot secure anywhere works fine when it comes to spyware, I tried malwarebytes but they make a super quick scan and dont detect even spyware, i doubt that it would detect more serious virus like this then.
