Actually, what shopnav does could be considered illegal. They steal 404 traffic. For those who do not know, 404 traffic refers to the 404 error "Page not found". I'm a webmaster and I own many sites and get a lot of traffic. I also sell advertising on my pages including my custom error page. IE has a default 404 error page however, if you have a website, you have the right and abiity to redirect your visitors to a custom 404 page. There are many reasons for this, for instance, let's say you redesign your website and delete the old one. In your .htaccess file, you just enter "ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomain.com/yoursite.html"
You see, your old pages are still listed in the search engines. By setting up 404 redirection, you can still get those visitors by redirecting them to your new site. So if they click on YOUR link in the search engines and the page does not exist anymore, you can redirect it back to YOUR site. That traffic belongs to you because they are clicking on a link that belongs to you!
What shopnav does is redirect ALL 404 traffic regardless if the website owner sets up 404 redirection!! That's strealing traffic and on the Internet, Traffic = Money so it's the same as stealing money out of your pocket.
Another thing is that I've been a webmaster for 8 years. I know what not to click on and I have my browser set to prompt me before allowing software like shopnav from being installed. I always say no. So I NEVER chose to have this software installed on my Laptop. How it got on my machine, I just do not know. Any software I've installed, I never allow the installtion of "addon" programs included in the setup files of programs. So it appears to me that the only way shopnav could have been installed on my machine is if it was forced on my machine by some sort of script that hides any notification of the installation process. Probably on a site I visited. I'm the only person to use my laptop and it's fairly new.
I'm contacting my attorneys about this. It would be an open shut case just by having the judge click on the links of my websites in the search engines so he/she can see the redirection to shopnav. I've noticed that my redirection requests in all of my sites has jumped way up and the traffic to my websites have decreased. I'm having to manually recreate the pages that do not exist anymore and install a redirection so shopnav cannot steal my traffic anymore and it's going to take me a very long time to do it. I've lost money because of shopnav and I'm losing even more money because of the time its taking to prevent then from stealing my traffic.
To top it off, I've tried their uninstall software 5 times and it does not wok.
Shopnav I'll see you in court!

I must admit that I share the same frustration that many of you have with this most annoying parasite. Who are these losers anyway that write this kind of software? I wanted to hunt them all down and kill them just as much as you all did, but it’s not worth going to jail for these idiots. With the help of websites like this one, we can beat them. Here’s my success story that hopefully helps the rest of you who haven’t gotten rid of this thing yet.
After unsuccessfully trying a bunch of spyware remover programs, I stumbled upon an article that described how ShopNav installs an Internet Explorer helper program under the Registry Key section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects. Typically, they are called IEHelper.dll, SNHelper.dll, or Searchhook.dll, but I had none of these on my computer. However, my Internet Explorer kept on redirecting to the ShopNav sites (websearch.drsnsrch.com) whenever I clicked the IE Search button or whenever I browsed to a nonexistent URL. I followed that registry path and found a registration number (too long and probably different on everyone's computers) that led me to a program called SYSTB.DLL with strange labeling called wbho.band. This SYSTB.DLL was in my C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Local Settings\Temp folder and it was getting run every time Internet Explorer was launched. THIS WAS THE PROGRAM THAT KEPT DIVERTING MY INTERNET EXPLORER TO THE SHOPNAV SITE! I had to exit IE before I could delete it. Then I reset all my IE Registry parameters that had the string "drsnsrch" in them, back to the MSN defaults, and clicked the button "Reset Web Settings..." in IE under Tools-->Internet Options. After all these steps, my browser was NO LONGER REDIRECTING to ShopNav!
I submitted a change for the main description at the top of this page which includes all of this information and all the registry changes. The webmaster has to review it first before it gets posted. Check back later if it's not up there yet.
(Sorry about the double backslashes. This website’s comment editor has a strange bug that seems to either clear out the backslashes or put in two!)

userinSF you must run spybot search and an anit-viral program like house scan regularly. How often depends on the type of sites your computer visits and how often the computer is used.
I already after a week got a new bug. No program is perfect. Spybot and some other coompanies even will help you block these bad sites. You also must make usre your ocmputer blocks adware sites. Tools; Internet options; privacy; edit; then enter the URL of the ad ware.
Delete all cookies and if you have a cooke for you bank you want to save then dig it out of cookies and put it in a special folder called GOOD COOKIES by Jack Smith (or whatever name you want there).
There is a good twain for printers and a bad twain adware. Naming files so you KNOW they were installed by you helps. All my MSN icons are in a special folder with a name ZZZ MSN GARBAGE ZZZ.
Spyware is like termites, you kill them and a month later you got them again.

I had visited shopnav.com some time ago to search for a removal program, but the one they had for download never worked, so I was left to try some of the more complicated messages you've all been through.
Being unsuccessful with those, I decided (in total desparation) to go back to the shopnav.com website, where I found a new, Internet-based removal system that actually seems to have worked.
Don't know if it will work for everyone, but it's worth a shot:
http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall.html
If this link doesn't work, look for it under support, click on the question "How do I unistall Desktop Search" and there should be a link. It's worth noting that for some people that are having trouble getting to some sites, that ShopNav has a tendency to block access to sites when you do not use "www." at the beginning (i.e, www.cnn.com instead of cnn.com).
Don't know if it will help, but I know what you're going through.
Good Luck!

1. Go to TOOLS" on the toolbar of Internet Explorer.
2. On the tools click on ' INTERNET OPTIONS".
3. The fifth tab is "CONNECTIONS", click that.
4. On the right is " SETTINGS" click that.
5. "PROXY SERVER" should not be checked in either box. If it is not checke then check off the first box on "PROXY SERVER".
6. "ADVANCED" will now be assessible. click on that.
7. "PROXY SETTINGS" should be blank.
8. delete that window and unclick "PROXY SERVER".
Some people may use a proxy server and in that case only those that you use should be there and the computer set the way you like it.
#5 SHOULD BE "NOTHING IS CHECKED" ADN #7 SHOULD BE "LIKE TOTALLY BLANK".
Temporary measure is that each time you start up Explorer you MUST uncheck the proxy server thing. This is a 'TEMPORARY, I GOT TO USE THE COMPUTER NOW' measure.
I know i should be asleep in bed but I keep wondering what I should wear to court when I sue that guy's butt off.

I recently purchased Ad-Aware. I had the demo running, but the Ad-Watch feature doesn't run with the demo, so somehow ShopNav got installed on my computer. For some reason, Ad-Aware would not remove the ShopNav crap. I tried using my Internet Options to set my browser back to its original settings. Of course, the Ad-Watch told me something was attempting to overwrite the dll, and I approved it, since it was me that was doing it. I'm happy to say, I'm now ShopNav free. I tried all the things I had done before that made it come up like doing searches, entering bad web addresses, hitting IE's search button, and no ShopNav crap came up. I also did another scan with Ad-Aware to make sure nothing else had been added to my computer. It seems it's now ShopNav free. When finished with the uninstall, I was taken to a website with a form asking why I uninstalled it. I left them a nice personalized message that you guys would've been proud of. Let's put it this way, they know how I feel about them.

i just filed a complaint with the AG of CA.
spyware has never bothered me. i live with it, and i am not irritated easily AT ALL.
but shopnav is one of the most irritating, parasitic things i have ever come across. countless times it has left me cussing loudly over a site that wont load because of it. this idiot bs company needs to be shut down, it is costing people money, and causing unneded stress and stomach ulcers.
if any of you has contact with hackers, try and organize a group to shut them down permanently, and cost them as much money as you can in the process. and that little i mentioned there is FAR less then what this company deserves. the creator should the thrown in the darkest, dampest dungeon that exists and be fed nothing but bread and water, and be tortured for the rest of his life. and even THAT would not be enough. i have never hated anything as i hate shopnav and the creator.
35. by gapeach04. 2004-07-14 19:07:04
Ps.
I also filed an on line complaint with the Attorney General of Caloifornia and demanded that they immediately have the Shop Nav site shut down!
36. by gapeach04. 2004-07-14 19:07:43
I too, have tried to contact Shop Nav and the only way I've gotten a response was to email them at admin@shopnav.com. Of course, all they told me to do was go to the site and use the uninstall, which does NOT work! I've tried every spyware program known to man! When they responded to my email, they told me to reply back w/ the URL of the page I was getting, which I did. There were one or two Spyware programs I couldn't purchase because -you guessed it! - I couldn't order it because I was redirected to Shop Nav!! I tried to get another number for Shop Nav, but had no luck. I also left a message at the number listed in the posing above, but of course, I got no return call! I work from my PC and these cretins are costing me money! If anyone is still interested in suing these people, count me in! I'm not a violent person, but I can see why the folks want to disembowel the creator of Shop Nav! I think Shop Nav should be considered a high risk VIRUS, not just spyware! This thing is causing a lot of problems and making people spend lots of money to try to remove it. It almost wouldn't surprise me if it was actually created by some of the same people who make the spyware removal software! Think about it- What better way to sell Spyware removal software, than to make Spyware that is completly resistant to most removal software! I say sue them, THEN disembowel them!! Who is with me??

Tried all the clues to find ShopNav in the registry to no avail. Tried SpyBot and doesn't find it either. What's the point of this thing anyway? Is someone actually making money disrupting navigation to display nothing more than what appears to be an ordinary search engine "favorites" screen? I mean, if they were selling a product I would at least get the point, even though they would still be a bunch of SOBs.

I make $800 on disabilty. I saved up $300 to get a basic barbones computer. Al I wanted was to have fun, chat, play dominoes and do Genealogy and sweepstakes.
I lost a part time online job of about $100 a month. I am sitting here crying, I hurt and am very sick phydically and mentally. The depression and crying. All I want is to access Heritage Quest Online. I also could not get into www.adobe.com and I now know after using i have in my Laura profile on the start menu one of the Shop Nav programs. On my no profile I have two My Web (Smiley) things which are out of shop Nav. I do not know how to remove them. I ahve gone through avirus site, McAfee free scan, Webroot.com Spy Sweeper, www.pestpatrol.com and have hand gone through the files.
PLEASE I WANT TO SURE THEM. I CANNOT DO GENEALOGY. I LOST MY JOB. I AM IN PAIN AND NOW I DOWNLOADED A PROGRAM CALLED SPYHUNTER AND CANNOT FIND THAT
I ALL I DREAMED OF WAS OWNING MY OWN COMPUTER AN THIS IS MY FIRST.
Whydoes shop nav do this. Why do hackers go to jail but these people are allowed to ruin people's lives?
I cannt take it anymore. In tear

Tried all the clues to find ShopNav in the registry to no avail. Tried SpyBot and doesn't find it either. I spent 6 hours yesterday deleting other spyware from Avenue Media which SpyBot didn't find either, but now successful gone. No luck with ShopNav, so will take Ed's advice and log a complaint. Such a waste of time!

What's the point of this thing anyway? Is someone actually making money disrupting navigation to display nothing more than what appears to be an ordinary search engine "favorites" screen? I mean, if they were selling a product I would at least get the point, even though they would still be a bunch of SOBs.
