As I said in the previous posting- I have tried almost every spyware removal program there is with no success. The two that I haven't tried, I can't get them because -surprise- I get redirected to SHOP NAV when I try to purchase them on line! I too, filed a complaint withe the California Atty. Gen, but even if the site is shut down, it will do me little good, now that my PC already has the nasty little vermin on it! What needs to happen, is for a class action law suit to be filed against that company! I hope they read post and realize that quite a few people hate them enough to do them bodily harm!

VERY IMPORTANT THAT ONLY PROFESSIONALS DO THIS.
1. Use Spybot Search & Destroy
2 use a free antiviral program like homescan.
3 use another anti spy program, Ad Aware6 is really good.
4. you must find int he registry the following terms. DO NOT REMOVER THEM UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. For example in the blocked address you have shopnav's addres, right? Then you go into the registry and pull everything including your blocked addresses and those with spy fighting programs. Also check the regular files with find programs in the start area of the computer.

1. Go to TOOLS" on the toolbar of Internet Explorer.
2. On the tools click on ' INTERNET OPTIONS".
3. The fifth tab is "CONNECTIONS", click that.
4. On the right is " SETTINGS" click that.
5. "PROXY SERVER" should not be checked in either box. If it is not checke then check off the first box on "PROXY SERVER".
6. "ADVANCED" will now be assessible. click on that.
7. "PROXY SETTINGS" should be blank.
8. delete that window and unclick "PROXY SERVER".
Some people may use a proxy server and in that case only those that you use should be there and the computer set the way you like it.
#5 SHOULD BE "NOTHING IS CHECKED" ADN #7 SHOULD BE "LIKE TOTALLY BLANK".
Temporary measure is that each time you start up Explorer you MUST uncheck the proxy server thing. This is a 'TEMPORARY, I GOT TO USE THE COMPUTER NOW' measure.
I know i should be asleep in bed but I keep wondering what I should wear to court when I sue that guy's butt off.

I had visited shopnav.com some time ago to search for a removal program, but the one they had for download never worked, so I was left to try some of the more complicated messages you've all been through.
Being unsuccessful with those, I decided (in total desparation) to go back to the shopnav.com website, where I found a new, Internet-based removal system that actually seems to have worked.
Don't know if it will work for everyone, but it's worth a shot:
http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall.html
If this link doesn't work, look for it under support, click on the question "How do I unistall Desktop Search" and there should be a link. It's worth noting that for some people that are having trouble getting to some sites, that ShopNav has a tendency to block access to sites when you do not use "www." at the beginning (i.e, www.cnn.com instead of cnn.com).
Don't know if it will help, but I know what you're going through.
Good Luck!

I have tried all listed uninstall method on the shopnav website. None of them work. Then I tried Spybot with the latest updated version, it works for me. It also removed bunch of other junks from my PC. I am not sure if I have to run it periodically
48. by mechurchlady. 2004-07-29 03:07:12
userinSF you must run spybot search and an anit-viral program like house scan regularly. How often depends on the type of sites your computer visits and how often the computer is used.
I already after a week got a new bug. No program is perfect. Spybot and some other coompanies even will help you block these bad sites. You also must make usre your ocmputer blocks adware sites. Tools; Internet options; privacy; edit; then enter the URL of the ad ware.
Delete all cookies and if you have a cooke for you bank you want to save then dig it out of cookies and put it in a special folder called GOOD COOKIES by Jack Smith (or whatever name you want there).
There is a good twain for printers and a bad twain adware. Naming files so you KNOW they were installed by you helps. All my MSN icons are in a special folder with a name ZZZ MSN GARBAGE ZZZ.

I must admit that I share the same frustration that many of you have with this most annoying parasite. Who are these losers anyway that write this kind of software? I wanted to hunt them all down and kill them just as much as you all did, but it’s not worth going to jail for these idiots. With the help of websites like this one, we can beat them. Here’s my success story that hopefully helps the rest of you who haven’t gotten rid of this thing yet.
After unsuccessfully trying a bunch of spyware remover programs, I stumbled upon an article that described how ShopNav installs an Internet Explorer helper program under the Registry Key section HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows
CurrentVersionExplorerBrowser Helper Objects. Typically, they are called IEHelper.dll, SNHelper.dll, or Searchhook.dll, but I had none of these on my computer. However, my Internet Explorer kept on redirecting to the ShopNav sites (websearch.drsnsrch.com) whenever I clicked the IE Search button or whenever I browsed to a nonexistent URL. I followed that registry path and found a registration number (too long and probably different on everyone's computers) that led me to a program called SYSTB.DLL with strange labeling called wbho.band. This SYSTB.DLL was in my C:Documents and Settings%USERNAME%Local SettingsTemp folder and it was getting run every time Internet Explorer was launched. THIS WAS THE PROGRAM THAT KEPT DIVERTING MY INTERNET EXPLORER TO THE SHOPNAV SITE! I had to exit IE before I could delete it. Then I reset all my IE Registry parameters that had the string "drsnsrch" in them, back to the MSN defaults, and clicked the button "Reset Web Settings..." in IE under Tools-->Internet Options. After all these steps, my browser was NO LONGER REDIRECTING to ShopNav!
I submitted a change for the main description at the top of this page which includes all of this information and all the registry changes. The webmaster has to review it first before it gets posted. Check back later if it's not up there yet.
(Sorry about the double backslashes. This website’s comment editor has a strange bug that seems to either clear out the backslashes or put in two!)

Actually, what shopnav does could be considered illegal. They steal 404 traffic. For those who do not know, 404 traffic refers to the 404 error "Page not found". I'm a webmaster and I own many sites and get a lot of traffic. I also sell advertising on my pages including my custom error page. IE has a default 404 error page however, if you have a website, you have the right and abiity to redirect your visitors to a custom 404 page. There are many reasons for this, for instance, let's say you redesign your website and delete the old one. In your .htaccess file, you just enter "ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yourdomain.com/yoursite.html"
You see, your old pages are still listed in the search engines. By setting up 404 redirection, you can still get those visitors by redirecting them to your new site. So if they click on YOUR link in the search engines and the page does not exist anymore, you can redirect it back to YOUR site. That traffic belongs to you because they are clicking on a link that belongs to you!
What shopnav does is redirect ALL 404 traffic regardless if the website owner sets up 404 redirection!! That's strealing traffic and on the Internet, Traffic = Money so it's the same as stealing money out of your pocket.
Another thing is that I've been a webmaster for 8 years. I know what not to click on and I have my browser set to prompt me before allowing software like shopnav from being installed. I always say no. So I NEVER chose to have this software installed on my Laptop. How it got on my machine, I just do not know. Any software I've installed, I never allow the installtion of "addon" programs included in the setup files of programs. So it appears to me that the only way shopnav could have been installed on my machine is if it was forced on my machine by some sort of script that hides any notification of the installation process. Probably on a site I visited. I'm the only person to use my laptop and it's fairly new.
I'm contacting my attorneys about this. It would be an open shut case just by having the judge click on the links of my websites in the search engines so he/she can see the redirection to shopnav. I've noticed that my redirection requests in all of my sites has jumped way up and the traffic to my websites have decreased. I'm having to manually recreate the pages that do not exist anymore and install a redirection so shopnav cannot steal my traffic anymore and it's going to take me a very long time to do it. I've lost money because of shopnav and I'm losing even more money because of the time its taking to prevent then from stealing my traffic.
To top it off, I've tried their uninstall software 5 times and it does not wok.
Shopnav I'll see you in court!

I am having the same problem as Peter in #21 post. I am so pissed off right now, I can't even think to do my work. Shopnav has rendered websites I use everyday unusable. It makes me furious that these bastards can install shit on my computer without my permission or knowledge. This is my personal property and they have no right to touch it. I have tried everything to uninstall this crap and nothing works. I have also emailed complaints to Shopnav with no avail. Good for your #51 for taking these assholes to court! I hope you are successful and shut them down!
Where can I complain about this in a formal and effective manner? Anyone know?

THIS WORKED FOR ME
The following instructions are from: http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ShopNav.html
SHOPNAV REMOVAL
Open the registry (click 'Start', choose 'Run', and type 'regedit'), and find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. In the list of values on the right, delete the 'srng' entry.
Next, open a DOS command prompt window (from Start->Programs->Accessories) and enter the following commands, for the IE variant:
cd "%WinDir%System"
regsvr32 /u "Program FilesSrngSearchHook.dll"
regsvr32 /u "Program FilesSrngIEHelper.dll"
Or for the SN variant:
cd "%WinDir%System"
regsvr32 /u "Program FilesSrngSNHelper.dll"
Restart the machine and you should be able to delete the 'Srng' folder inside the Program Files folder. You can also open the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and delete key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARESrng, and delete the 'words.lst' file in the Windows folder to clean up if you like.
Finally, restore the normal search settings (Internet Options->Programs->Reset Web Settings).

In regards to #58.. deleting the file "systb.dll" does work. I tried it, the first time, I also had trouble deleting the file. It said "cannot delete.. may be in use.." blah blah blah... just get off the internet and then try again.. if that fails, restart your computer. Make sure the first thing you do before you start up anything else to go and delete that file. I did and it works! I got my default msn search engine back. I missed it so much, can't explain how wonderful i felt when shopnav didnt pop up. =D good luck to u all!!
