Sober.x is an Internet worm, which propagates by e-mail through messages with attached Zip archives containing copies of the parasite.

Once the user unpacks such an archive and executes an infected file, the worm displays a fake error message ("Error: CRC not complete"), installs itself to the system, checks the network connection and the current date and then runs a spreading routine. Sober.x searches local files for e-mail addresses, collects them and sends a malicious message to each of them using own mail engine. Letters may be in either German or English, its subject and body vary.

The worm does not carry any destructive payload, as it is designed only to spread. However, its activity may cause system instability and degrade Internet connection bandwith.

Sober.x automatically runs on every Windows startup.
