Security experts suggest that TopSearchLinks.net virus is a potentially unwanted program and further classify it as a browser hijacker. The virus earns its name because of the characteristic behaviour it exhibits upon entering computers. Initially, the TopSearchLinks.net hijack the browser’s settings and alter them to by setting the default search engine, homepage and the new URL tab to load its predetermined website each time the browser is opened. This setting alteration is carried out in order to gain more control over the browser and for the virus to be able to modify your regular search results. It is important to note that these results may be different than you are accustomed to by using acknowledged search service providers such as Google, Bing or Yahoo. If you decide to or are forced to use this website, you will notice that the results mainly consists of sponsored websites, offering to purchase some random merchandise. What is more, you may also notice that these links offered by TopSearchLinks.net redirect you to sites which are not even related to the promised merchandise whatsoever. In fact, the links will lead you to predetermined, affiliate websites, which are promoted by the TopSearchLinks.net hijacker. The only ones benefitting from such advertising are the affiliate website owners and browser hijacker creators, whereas the user receives no actual benefit from these ads. We have previously mentioned that you may be “forced” to use this website, and this is, in fact, a legitimate problem. The users report difficulties in retrieving their browsers’ original settings. Such situation is related to the fact that browser hijackers usually install browser add-ons and extensions which help the virus to stay put on your browser even after attempting to remove it from the computer. So, failing to detect all of the virus-related components may result in TopSearchLinks.net bouncing back to your browser. It is important to note, however, that this hijacker does not pose major threats to your computer, even though it might bring some unpleasant consequences if you continue to use it. Because programs like these are mainly profit-oriented, the programming side of them is usually very poor.
