ZeroAccess is rootkit that has been successfully doing its job on thousands of computer systems. Once it infects the system, ZeroAccess downloads various malware infections. There has been estimated that ZeroAccess have been installed to approximately 250,000 systems all over the world. At the moment, the rootkit mainly infects with fake antivirus programs, such as Wireshark Antivirus and many more. These programs work by imitating performing system scans and displaying security notifications in order to make random computer users purchase Wireshark Antivirus or similar program as a tool to eliminate all detected infections. The purpose of people creating this kind of scams is to earn money easily from as many computer users as possible.
ZeroAccess itself cannot damage the host or reveal any data, it’s just a mean used by computer criminals to manipulate over the systems and get them infected with tons of different infections. The most common way to get infected with ZeroAccess rootkit is by some compromised site. So basically, no one is protected from that. You can receive a link to such website by spam or even torrent site. Then you will download ZeroAccess without even knowing about it. If you have been infected with Zero Access rookit, use an anti-rootkit program, for example, Webroot, or update your reliable antispyware program and run a full system scan.
