Scan&Clean does not only use false positives, but also creates malicious objects during system scans. These objects are mostly harmful registry keys related to certain parasites. The program does not actually install any threats, but only creates some apparently harmless objects, which it then identifies as dangerous risks. This is made in order to deceive the user and trick him or her into purchasing Safe&Clean.
We have carefully tested the application on several absolutely clean uninfected computers. On one machine Scan&Clean managed to find 9 harmful registry keys and 8 malicious files related to 9 different parasites. Further analysis revealed that 2 entries were false positives, as files and keys in them actually belong to installed fully legitimate VMWare software. Other purportedly malicious objects were created by Scan&Clean during system scan. See a screenshot provided below.
On another test machine Scan&Clean produced similar results. It found 4 harmful registry keys and 4 malicious files related to 5 different parasites. Further analysis revealed that 3 entries were false positives, as files and keys in them actually belong to installed fully legitimate programs – STOPzilla anti-spyware and WMF vulnerability hotfix. Remaining 2 entries were created by Safe&Clean. See another screenshot.
System scan doesn’t take more than one minute. Apparently Safe&Clean doesn’t check most parts of the system at all.
Free version refuses to remove any malware it finds. It asks to register and purchase full commercial version.
Scan&Clean is a clone of UnSpyPC, the infamous illegally distributed spyware remover. Both applications have the same interface, use very similar spyware definitions database and consist of terribly similar components.
