What are rogue websites and how to remove them

| Type: Rogue websites

Rogue websites are malicious domains, sites or IP addresses that seek to put their visitors at the risk of malware. Such sites are considered dangerous because they are mostly used for the distribution of malware. Viruses that have been actively promoted with the help of corrupt websites can be categorized as:

Also, a rogue site can be used for extorting sensitive information from its victim. Hackers that develop such websites seek to take over people's login names, passwords, banking data, email address, computer's specifications and other information. This is mostly done by filling a website with misleading content, like stolen photos and login pages, misleading promotions, information about discounts and offers that people like to double check when they browse on the Internet.

Beware that you can not notice the fact that the website you are visiting is corrupted and only a reliable anti-spyware can help you to do that. If fact, sometimes even the owner of such website does not know that his/hers site is corrupted and now is used for malicious activity. That is why security experts recommend installing a reputable anti-spyware that warns people about potential dangers and blocks the access to insecure places.

Types of rogue websites and their intentions

Corrupted websites are malicious domains that created for various reasons. Here are the most popular types of corrupt domains that you may visit with or without your knowledge:

  • Sites that host malware. A website that is filled with malicious URLs and other content that can lead people into installation of malware or potentially unwanted programs is considered a rogue website. Malware hosting sites are mostly used for spreading ransomware, rogue anti-spyware, Trojan horses, browser hijackers and similar malicious applications that are capable of recording victims' keystrokes, taking screenshots or even launching a Bitcoin mining application. In most of the cases, such sites don't even pretend to be legal and safe domains.

  • Social engineering-related sites. Rogue sites become corrupted once they are filed with exploit kits and similar malicious payload. Exploit kits look for security vulnerabilities in web browsers and programs, such as Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player and Java. Because of these "security holes", they get ability to infiltrate computer as soon as its owner enters the rogue site and clicks on a specific notification. Typically, content that promotes malware and rogue programs involves fake alerts, banners, links and other notifications that are displayed within the site. It can be filled with the information about discounts, missing updates, contests and similar tricky things. In addition, the victim can also be offered to check his/hers computer with the "reliable" security software. Unfortunately, but clicking on such alert can lead you to the only thing - infiltration of malware.

  • Phishing sites. Corrupted/rogue sites can try to present themselves as legitimate institutions and authorities. They are typically designed by grabbing the photos of legitimate websites and then selecting URLs that are almost identical to the real ones. The main targets of this technique are various governmental institutions, banks, universities and known companies. Typically, such rogue sites are used for stealing personal information, such as logins, passwords and credit card numbers.

Examples of rogue domains

Movie4k.to. Security experts believe that people should be careful with this video steaming site. No matter that it presents itself as a legitimate domain that can be used for viewing interesting movies and similar content, there is no guarantee that it is not used for sharing the third party software. That means that you can be tricked into downloading a rogue anti-spyware, ransomware, a potentially unwanted program (adware, browser hijacker, etc.) or similar software that you don't need. Also, it has been causing an excessive amount of suspiciously-looking ads that have also been used for spreading these or similar programs that are considered useless.

State-dangerousalert-us-01.in is a really harmful site seeking to push people into believing that they have to pay a fine, a free or make a similar payment. First of all, this rogue site seeks to convince its victims into thinking that FBI or other governmental authority noticed them for using the copyrighted content, illegal files and similar content. It typically informs its victims that they can get into jail for such activities as the distribution of pornographic material, malware, etc. As soon as victim enters this website, it blocks the browser and informs him/her about such activity. In addition, it asks to pay the fine to unblock the system. In most of the cases, leaving this site does not help to unblock the browser.

PC Health Care: Online Virus Scan System PC Health Care: Online Virus Scan System is a malicious website, which can easily trick you into spending your money on useless support service. It typically reports about seriously-looking computer problems and then offers calling the specific number to get a premium support service. In reality, all you can get is an increased telephone bill and a virus that can be presented as a trustworthy security software. If you don't want to talk with scammers, you should leave this site as soon as possible.

Avoiding rogue sites and protecting your computer

If you want to protect yourself from rogue websites, you must always remember about these important tasks:

  • Avoiding illegal and suspicious websites. Following safe browsing practices is very important when seeking to avoid rogue sites. This can also help you to protect computer and data that is kept on it. No matter how tempting such sites seem, the safest way to deal with them is to avoid them.
  • Ignoring untrustworthy ads. All pop-up notifications that claim that you need to install missing updates or that you should call a specific number to get a prize should be avoided because the most of them are used for redirecting people to rogue sites. This technique has also been used for promoting rogue programs and potentially unwanted applications, such as adware and browser hijackers.
  • Installing a reliable anti-malware. There are several programs that can help you to spot the malicious site. The most trustworthy ones are: Reimage, PlumbytesWebroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus. You should never use them without updating them to their latest versions, so the first thing that you should do after downloading one of these apps is installing its updates.
