How to see hidden files

If you don’t see your files, you may have accidentally modified or deleted them. To unhide hidden files, you should follow the steps according to the Windows version you have:

Windows XP

  1. Go to desktop.
  2. Double-click ‘My Computer’ icon.
  3. Choose ‘Tools’ ?†’ ‘Folder Options’.
  4. Wait for the new window and select ‘View’ tab.
  5. Check the box ‘Display the contents of system folders’.
  6. Select the button ‘Show hidden files and folders’ under the ‘Hidden files and folders’ section.
  7. Uncheck the box ‘Hide file extensions for known file types’.
  8. Uncheck the box labeled ‘Hide protected operating system files’.
  9. Click ‘Apply’ ?†’ OK and shutdown ‘My Computer’.
  10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Windows Vista

  1. Go to desktop.
  2. Click ‘Start’ ?†’ ‘Control Panel’.
  3. When you open ‘Control Panel’, you can choose ‘Classic View’ or ‘Control Panel Home View’, so:

* When on ‘Classic View’:

  • Double-click ‘Folder Options’.
  • Click on ‘View’ tab.
  • Go to step 4.

* When on ‘Control Panel Home View’:

  • Click on the ‘Appearance and Personalization’ link.
  • Click on ‘Show Hidden Files or Folders’.
  • Go to step 4.

4. Select the button ‘Show hidden files and folders’ when on ‘Hidden files and folders’ section.

5. Uncheck the box labeled ‘Hide extensions for known file types’.

6. Uncheck the box labeled ‘Hide protected operating system files’.

7. Press ‘Apply’ ?†’ OK.

8. Now your PC is configured to show all hidden files.

Windows 7

  1. Go to desktop.
  2. Click ‘Start’ ?†’ ‘Control Panel’ menu option.
  3. When you see ‘Control Panel’, click on the ‘Appearance and Personalization’ link.
  4. Click ‘Show Hidden Files or Folders’ under the category ‘Folder Options’.
  5. Select the button ‘Show hidden files, folders, or drives’ under the ‘Hidden files and folders’ section.
  6. Uncheck the box labeled ‘Hide extensions for known file types’.
  7. Uncheck the box labeled ‘Hide protected operating system files’ (Recommended).
  8. Finally, press ‘Apply’ ?†’ OK.
  9. Now your PC is configured to show all hidden files.
