BrickR ransomware seeks to swindle money from you without giving any guarantees regarding data decryption

BrickR virus is also known as File Informer ransomware. It is a file-encrypting program that belongs to malware[1] category. The ransomware was dubbed this way due to extensions it appends to encrypted data – once it encrypts a file, it adds .brickr file extension after its original extension. The ransomware then launches a message that greets the victims with “!!!!! READ THIS TEXT CAREFULLY !!!!!” line that is followed by information divided into four sections – What happened?, What does it mean?, How to buy the key and get my files back? and What is Bitcoin and how do I use it?. The virus also replaces the desktop background with a black wallpaper with a warning about the ransomware attack written in red. The virus also created READ_DECRYPT_FILES.txt file on the desktop, which displays the same information as File Informer program does. The ransomware also provides an email address so that victims could contact cyber criminals – decryptmystuff@protonmail.com. The ransomware demands 55 USD (the price can differ depending on the version of the ransomware) in Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Therefore, in order to restore files, the victim has to buy Bitcoins[2].

BrickR ransomware virus

Although the price of the ransom is not that high (if compared to payments asked by other ransomware variants), do not be tempted to pay it. By transferring Bitcoins to cyber criminals, you would simply fund their further ransomware projects. We do not recommend buying them to pay the ransom because there is no way you can know whether criminals will provide you with decryption software or not. For this reason, we do not think it is wise to risk losing your money the same way you lost your files. We recommend you to remove BrickR with Reimage or another anti-malware software and try to restore some files from external data storage devices or, if possible, online data storage services. Before you try to do so, finish BrickR removal first.

Distribution of the fearsome ransomware

You can run into this ransomware after opening a malicious email attachment, using a weak password for RDP, clicking on suspicious links or ads online, or by installing illegal software. If you do not want to unknowingly activate ransomware and let it encrypt all of your files, better stay away from ALL emails sent by unknown people or organizations. Besides, stay clear of phishing emails that are designed to look like they’re sent by reputable companies such as Amazon, PayPal or FedEx. In addition to that, do not randomly click on links provided next to click-bait type headlines or suspicious ads placed on questionable web pages. On top of that, you should avoid installing pirated software because they often contain Trojans that are later used to infect victim’s system with additional malware. Finally, protect your system with a trustworthy anti-malware tool so that attackers couldn’t plant malware on your system.

Bonus: Recover your data

Guide which is presented above is supposed to help you remove BrickR from your computer. To recover your encrypted files, we recommend using a detailed guide prepared by 2-spyware.com security experts.

If your files were encrypted, you can restore them in only one way – by using a backup. If you do not have a backup, then you are in quite a complicated situation, to say at least. Although we do not recommend doing so, you might start thinking that maybe it is worth paying the ransom, however, we must warn you that criminals tend to ignore victims after receiving the payment. By paying the ransom, you risk being fooled, besides, you fund further ransomware projects. Instead of paying the ransom, you can try one of the provided options.

If your files are encrypted by BrickR, you can use several methods to restore them:

Recovery method 1: Use Data Recovery Pro

Data Recovery Pro is extremely useful when dealing with piles of corrupted files, or after accidentally losing some important files. Run a scan with it to detect recoverable files.

Data Recovery Method 2: Use Previous Windows Versions

You can use Previous Windows Versions if you want to recover your files, however, this feature will only work if you had created a system restore point prior to the ransomware attack.

  • Find an encrypted file you need to restore and right-click on it;
  • Select “Properties” and go to “Previous versions” tab;
  • Here, check each of available copies of the file in “Folder versions”. You should select the version you want to recover and click “Restore”.

Decryption tools for BrickR ransomware are not available yet

Finally, you should always think about the protection of crypto-ransomwares. In order to protect your computer from BrickR and other ransomwares, use a reputable anti-spyware, such as Reimage, Plumbytes Anti-MalwareWebroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus or Malwarebytes Anti Malware
