DesktopNews is an app that is supposed to inform people about the latest news. According to its developers, it should browse through the most popular news sites, including CNBC, CNN, BBC World, News.com, and News Uk, and pick out the latest ones. Thus, the installation of DesktopNews Gadget might appear like a great idea. However, before you do that, we would like to name a couple of things that are not disclosed about this app directly.
What facts are unsaid about DesktopNews?
1. DesktopNews is a free browser add-on for Windows operating system. It can be downloaded from the official website and enabled on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari web browsers. Unfortunately, but except for security experts, no one mentions that DesktopNews is an adware that is also promoted via software packages as well. It means that people don’t even have to visit the official website of this program to install it. It can slither onto your computer via another freeware without being noticed, so it’s a must to monitor freeware’s installation carefully.
2. This app is ad-supported. Malware analysts warn that this browser add-on is supported by advertising and uses ActionScript3 to show third party ads. Therefore, no matter how, consciously or accidentally, you install it, DesktopNews adware is going to flood you with deals, discounts, coupons, promo codes, other shopping-relayed stuff. Usually, these ads are displayed as pop-ups, pop-unders, banners, in-text links, interstitials and other intrusive forms, so there is not doubt that they will disrupt your browsing activities.

3. Misleading “Ads by DesktopNews.” Although that might not necessarily happen, you may experience DesktopNews redirects to compromised websites. Our malware research team has found out that some of the DesktopNews may be involved into malware/PUP distribution. Misleading ads may inform you about missing software updates, free scanners, system errors, promote remote technical support, and so on. Thus, if an advertisement powered by DesktopNews Gadget virus raises the slightest suspicion for you, don’t click on it. Instead of that, click on the button to launch FortectIntego and run a full system scan with it to remove DesktopNews adware.
4. Unauthorized usage of cookies. DesktopNews is filled with cookies that are installed alongside it all the time. Thus, without even realizing that, you may allow this app to track your search terms, pages viewed, data entered while viewing them, clicks, IP address, PC’s geolocation, email address, and so on. Therefore, if you are not fond of disclosing any information about you, you should remove this adware right away.
How can I avoid DesktopNews hijack?
We have already noted, DesktopNews virus is promoted using ‘bundling.’ Therefore, if you want to protect yourself and ensure your PC’s security, make sure that you check all freewares as carefully as possible. Even if you have downloaded a free program from Cnet, Softonic, Soft32, Download, and so on, choose Advanced/Custom installation mode and carefully check if it is filled with ‘optional download.’ If you find an offer to install DesktopNews Gadget or another unfamiliar add-on, toolbar, plug-in, extension, etc., untick each of them and only then click ‘Finish’ button. This way, you should block the way for Potentially unwanted programs to your PC.
What options do I have to fix my PC?
DesktopNews redirects can be stopped only if you remove this adware from the system. This can be done both manually and automatically. Our malware specialists have submitted step-by-step instructions that explain how to remove DesktopNews from Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. However, we highly recommend people to install a reliable anti-malware and remove such and similar PUPs automatically. This way, all supporting components will be removed, and all other compromised apps will be gone. Thus, be wise and remove DesktopNews virus properly.
