The unexpected appearance of SearchBy.net warns about hijacked web browser

SearchBy.net is a questionable search engine that offers to look up for the information in Web, Shop, News and Weather categories. However, it might replace your current default search engine after installation of Ultimate Popup Killer program or other freeware.[1] Thus, it can infiltrate the system as any other potentially unwanted program (PUP).
Due to the ability to appear on the browser without asking direct user’s permissions, the program is often referred to as SearchBy.net virus. However, it’s just a browser hijacker that cannot cause immediate harm to your PC. Though, you should not keep this program installed on the device due to its negative features.
After the SearchBy.net hijack, the PUP might modify Windows registry and browser’s settings. As a result, it might replace default search engine, homepage or even new tab. When you enter keywords into the search engine or address bar, you get redirected to startpage.com results page. This search service is not reliable; thus the credibility of this program is also questionable.
During the time, you might notice annoying SearchBy.net redirect issues. The program might redirect you to third-party sites once you click on the results link or any other web content. Not only this feature is annoying but also might force you to visit a potentially dangerous website, such as tech support scam or phishing.[2]
Therefore, we highly recommend avoiding using this tool to protect your computer. Additionally, the Privacy Policy tells that they might collect browsing related and personally identifiable information. The company briefly mentions that the information is aggregated and possibly shared with third-parties if users agree with it when signing to particular SearchBy.net services.
Though, if you feel that you may have accidentally given the permission this program to track your steps online and want to stop these activities, you should remove SearchBy.net from the computer. In order to do so, you can follow the manual removal guidelines at the end of the article.
However, if the PUP was installed in a software package, you should terminate it with the help of reputable anti-malware. For SearchBy.net removal we suggest using FortectIntego. However, don’t forget to update the program before you run the system scan.

Ways used for spreading the browser hijacker
The SearchBy.net might appear on the web browser when users download and install Ultimate Popup Killer program. However, it might also be offered in other software packages. Therefore, you should always check if you are installing a single program or a package:
- Choose Advanced/Custom settings instead of Quick/Standard;
- Monitor the installation and unmark pre-selected app offers and agreements to change default search engine;
- Read EULA and Terms of Use carefully to find the information if your chosen program does not come together with additional apps.
Security experts from Les Virus[3] point out that paying attention to software installation takes less time than dealing with negative features of potentially unwanted applications and their removal.
