Search.xyz search engine is not reliable tool

Search.xyz is a questionable search engine that spreads as a SearchXYZ Chrome extension. On Chrome Web Store, it is presented as an extension that offers the best search experience and helps to find needed information quickly. However, security experts report that it operates as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.[1]
Therefore, instead of enhancing your browsing experience, it causes opposite effects, such as:
- ability to infiltrate the system unnoticed with the help of bundling;
- alteration of browser’s settings;
- replacement of default search engine, homepage, and new tab URL;
- installation of questionable add-ons;
- search redirects to affiliate websites;
- delivery of unwanted and potentially dangerous commercial content;
- data tracking and sharing with third-parties.
So-called Search.xyz virus cannot cause direct harm to the device. It can only alter system settings and disturb browsing sessions. However, these activities might increase your chances to suffer from cyber criminals.
The biggest issues and concerns are related to Search.xyz redirect tendencies. Once you click on a search result or ad, it might lead you to a compromised or scam website[2] where your PC might get infected with malware or get your personal details stolen.
Thus, no matter how reliable this search tool looks, you should not use it. Differently than other browser hijackers, this one does not redirect search queries to popular search engines, such as Google. Search.xyz uses its own algorithm which allows altering search results and including sponsored links on the results page.
If this browser add-on hijacked Google Chrome, we highly recommend focusing on Search.xyz removal first. The PUP not only controls your browsing sessions but might track information about your activities online and share it with third-parties. As a result, you will see lots of targeted ads that might be misleading.
In order not to get tricked by eye-catching ads, you should remove Search.xyz from Chrome and the computer. You can follow manual removal guide presented below or use FortectIntego to clean your PC automatically.

Bundling is the main distribution method of the hijacker
Browser hijacker has an official website that offers to download this search tool. It is also available on Chrome web store. However, direct downloads are not the main distribution strategy. Search.xyz hijack is usually sudden and unexpected.
Developers use bundling technique that allows adding it as an optional component to freeware or shareware. If you do not check software installer, you give indirect permission to all additional components to enter the system.
To avoid this in the future, you have to use Advanced/Custom installation guide instead of Quick/Recommended. The latter settings do not openly disclose about third-party attachments but still installs them silently. Meanwhile, the Advanced setup allows adjusting installation of additional programs.
Remove SearchXYZ from the device entirely
Search.xyz removal can be performed either manually or automatically. Manual removal requires uninstalling suspicious programs, browser extensions or files. Our experts prepared detailed guidelines below. Thus, if you should follow them carefully.
However, experts from NoVirus[3] warn that the hijacker might be hiding deep in the system or installed additional add-ons. Thus, locating and terminating them manually might be a time-consuming task. It might end up with a failure too, especially if you are doing it for the first time.
Thus, if you want to remove Search.xyz quickly and without putting too much effort, you should use anti-malware tool. All you have to do is to scan the system with reputable security software and reset Google Chrome.
