MyOfficeTab – a browser hijacker that instead of providing useful features reads users' browsing history and changes data

 MyOfficeTab virus

MyOfficeTab is a suspicious extension presenting office utility features on your browser. After the program hijacks your system, it starts appearing on every browser you use. Additionally to such behavior, the intruder makes changes to your homepage, new tab, and the default search engine.

So, no matter that the article's culprit is promoted as a useful addition to your browser as it helps you manage your apps, online search results displayed by newtab.myofficetab.com are useless and can even expose users to possibly malicious content. Nevertheless, you need a full system scan with a reputable antivirus program to make sure that every cyber infection is eliminated from the device and cannot affect the computer.

Name MyOfficeTab
Type Browser extension
Category Browser hijacker/Potentially unwanted program
Main danger Tracks and collects users' information
Symptoms Changes homepage, new tab, default search engine, displays commercial content, slows down the performance of the device in general
Distribution Freeware installations, including bundled software
Elimination Clean the system automatically with security tools and uninstall the unwanted content manually

Despite all promotional content that claims about the PUP's functionality and usefulness, this browser extension is not valuable at all. It should be removed from the device and all web browsers themselves without even trying its functionality. However, in most cases, it is not enough to uninstall and delete the program, and you need to clean the system from the main PUP that causes the installation of this browser tool.

Once installed, MyOfficeTab virus delivers intrusive content. However, its real classification should be the potentially unwanted program[1] which gets installed during freeware's installation and then causes additional infiltration of unwanted content. Unfortunately, you cannot see such infiltration, and the only thing you notice is the unwanted behavior and changes on the device.

However, there are several symptoms that indicate the adware on the system:

  • Changed in-browser search engine;
  • Default homepage, new tab set to an unfamiliar page;
  • Commercial pop-up ads that are filling up the screen;
  • Advertising banners injected on commonly visited sites;
  • Each pop-up ad causes redirects to questionable websites;
  • The browser performs slower due to additional browser content.

To remove MyOfficeTab properly and forget about intrusive commercial content, you need to get rid of the PUP and other infections that are possibly hiding on the system without your knowledge. People complain about the changed homepage and default search engine, others are complaining about redirects to potentially malicious content.

However, this intrusive behavior is not the only reason you need to perform the removal with SpyHunterCombo Cleaner or MalwarebytesMalwarebytes. Like many other PUPs or adware programs that are related to advertisers and commercial content creators, this intruder can track and even collect your information using data-tracking cookies.[2]

Details about your device, internet provider, browsing habits, most viewed sites, or commonly searched items can be tracked, collected, and later even shared with third-party advertisers with the purpose of creating more personalized ads. Once you get rid of MyOfficeTab virus, scan the system with the FortectIntego software to repair virus damage.

Software bundling is the PUP spreading technique

There might be a few different techniques used to distribute these intruders that categorize as potentially unwanted programs, but the main method is insecure freeware installations during which software is packed with unwanted content and spread on the internet.

You can avoid this cyber infiltration by choosing Advanced or Custom options while installing your software or programs from the web. Choosing the official provider can also give you an advantage and help avoid intrusive cyber infections. Additionally, you can follow these tips from security experts[3]:

  • Get your programs from reputable sources or official providers;
  • Always choose Advanced or Custom installation options;
  • Manage your browser content by removing extensions and toolbars installed without your permission;
  • Scan the system with anti-malware tools more frequently.

Remove MyOfficeTab from the browser and clean the system using professional tools

Remove MyOfficeTab as soon as you notice any upper-mentioned symptoms. You can do so manually by uninstalling this intruder and other related content.
