Ads by Browser Extension – why do they appear on your screen?

Ads by Browser Extension virus is a serious problem nowadays, and we are sure that some version of this computer infection has affected every computer at least one time. Typically, adware-type programs get installed on victim’s computer alongside other free programs, and then they add a particular add-on and tracking cookies to every web browser. These browser additions are meant to collect data about user’s browsing sessions (including search queries, clicks, a list of visited websites, and similar personally non-identifiable data), analyze it, and then deliver targeted advertisements. Needless to say, web advertisements powered by potentially unwanted programs can be incredibly annoying, especially because they tend to show up in a form of pop-up ads, full-screen ads, banners, or in-text links. Using a computer infected by an adware program is not a pleasant experience, and that is why users are advised to remove Browser Extension as soon as these web advertisements marked as “Browser Extension ads” start appearing on the screen. Below, we have listed what such intrusive ad-supported programs typically advertise:

  • Various shopping offers, including price comparisons, discount codes, vouchers, and similar content;
  • Questionable anti-malware applications or rogue PC optimization tools;
  • Technical support services (these ads suggest calling a tech support number, but be aware that by dialing that number you can get in touch with tech support scammers);
  • Vague surveys;
  • Other content.

Typically, ad-supported programs are not malicious, and they cannot do harm to your computer system. Nonetheless, it is not recommended to click on these ads or to rely on offers they provide blindly. Most of these ads are generated based on information tracking cookies collect about you, so do not be deceived! Some of these ads might provide really catchy offers, but once you click on them, they can unexpectedly redirect you to highly suspicious websites that can be harmful. Therefore, if you continuously see particular ads appearing during your browsing sessions, you should look for a particular Browser Extension and related program on your computer system. Typically, such ads can be stopped only by completing Browser Extension removal. If you cannot identify what extension delivers you these ads, scan your computer system with FortectIntego or a similar software and remove Browser Extension ads automatically.

How did this program hijack my computer?

Usually, programs that spread Browser Extension hijack the computer after being installed together with other free programs. The computer user should always attentively watch what programs does he/she install, and adjust their installation settings at all times. Initially, setup settings are set to Default or Standard option, but the user needs to configure this selection and switch it to Advanced or Custom one. Then the setup settings should expand and provide a list of additional software that can be installed along with user’s preferred program. If possible, unmark them and continue with the installation. This distribution technique is called bundling, and it is very frequently used by adware, browser hijackers, and other ad-supported software developers. That is why you should be very careful and avoid downloading freeware from questionable Internet sources. Unfortunately, we can not protect your computer for you. That is why you should have a reliable anti-spyware program for full protection of your system.
