Otaherreau.xyz is a dubious site that was created to generate revenue from pay-per-click advertising.^[1] The website displays a message “Get The Latest News Updates From Around The World.” Users are encouraged to click the “Allow” button to subscribe to push notifications. After a while, users start getting spammed with annoying pop-up ads that sometimes appear even when the browser is closed.

Originally, push notifications were meant to provide value for the customers, like informing them about the latest news, updates, and offers. Later, this function was recognized as a great marketing opportunity. This was not overlooked by fraudsters who want to exploit people by putting in as little effort as possible.

The owners of such sites can recreate thousands of them and promote them on other shady websites to get as many people to subscribe. Ads start coming from various sources and some of them may be questionable. Links embedded in the pop-ups can lead to dangerous websites where people can get tricked into providing their personal information or downloading PUPs (potentially unwanted programs)^[2] and malware.

You should always read everything fully, before agreeing to something. You should never have to subscribe to push notifications on a legitimate page to be able to watch a video or access some content. MS Edge (Chromium):

Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer, and click on the Gear icon at the top-right on the window.

Windows 10/8:

1. Enter Control Panel into Windows search box and hit Enter or click on the search result.
2. Under Programs, select Uninstall a program.
3. From the list, find the entry of the suspicious program.
4. Right-click on the application and select Uninstall.
5. If User Account Control shows up, click Yes.
6. Wait till uninstallation process is complete and click OK.

Windows 7/XP:

1. Click on Windows Start > Control Panel located on the right pane (if you are Windows XP user, click on Add/Remove Programs).
2. In Control Panel, select Programs > Uninstall a program.
3. Pick the unwanted application by clicking on it once.
4. At the top, click Uninstall/Change.
5. In the confirmation prompt, pick Yes.
6. Click OK once the removal process is finished.

Mac:

1. From the menu bar, select Go > Applications.
