SmashTab Removal Guide

What is SmashTab?

SmashTab is the extension that changes default search engine and bookmarks on the browser without permission

SmashTabSmashTab is the toolbar that acts as a browser hijacker because it alters settings on the browser to control traffic. SmashTab – the toolbar that is considered a browser hijacker because it affects every online search by delivering sponsored content on the list. The application can be promoted as a great tool, useful addition to your web browser, but it manipulates settings, so every browsing session turns into redirections with commercial content and sponsored pop-ups. If you install this Toolbar yourself, you agree with those changes and other alterations that the program can make automatically. It is possible to fall for the false claims and add the extensions on purpose, but the main way to spread this intruder is software bundling.

This potentially unwanted program gets called a SmashTab virus for the unwanted changes and permissions that the intruder gets from the user using deceptive techniques and misleading methods. This is not a harmful program, but you can end up on malicious sites unwillingly and trigger malicious program infiltration without realizing that. This is why you should pay close attention and make sure to clear the system to avoid further damage.

Name SmashTab
Type Browser hijacker/ Potentially unwanted program[1]
Symptoms The program creates issues with online searches because it sets itself as a default search engine and redirects all the sessions through its own engine, so commercial material is more often injected into the list of results
Distribution You cannot change default preferences back to what you need, so the PUP itself controls traffic
Issues Online traffic gets rerouted through the engine that is not providing improved results. It shows sponsored material instead and tries to expose users to possibly dangerous content online
Eliminate SmashTab removal is the process that requires additional help from the security tools that can clear the machine automatically
Repair The system can be repaired when you suffer from the infection. FortectIntego can find and restore some features, functions, programs that get altered by the threat or the PUP itself

SmashTab is the intruder that triggers problems with the machine because it promotes the shady search engine and other programs, but all of them are considered potentially unwanted and possibly harmful. Data tracking issues and advertising campaigns[2] that can lead to more issues with the pop-ups and redirects are not useful at all.

You should think about the fact that SmashTab is similar or close to other intruders of the same type because it acts on the principle to redirect users' traffic and affect the performance this way. DictionaryBoss Toolbar, Babylon Toolbar, and Inbox Toolbar all can change settings and alter preferences on your web browser.

SmashTab PUP can trigger additional installations of programs and applications, browser-based programs, so the machine is significantly affected this way. You should remove all the possible intruders, so once you run SpyHunter 5Combo Cleaner or Malwarebytes and the list of programs and files appear, cleared them off of the PC.

SmashTab ToolbarSmashTab is a potentially unwanted program that can be downloaded on purpose. Even though there are sources that promote SmashTab PUP and distribute the program as a proper application or browser-based programs, you shouldn't fall for those claims on random sites and pay closer attention to material that you end up seeing online. Never install a program that is not delivered from an official site or a reliable source.

You should avoid such silent and automatic installation, so you do not need to remove SmashTab in the future when it triggers unwanted damage and changes important PC settings without your permission. You can avoid these PUP infiltrations, so the search engine is not set to behind your back.

However, if this happens, and you additionally experience issues with the speed, performance, other program installations, you might suffer from a more intrusive cyber threat and need to rely on powerful tools that can help with SmashTab removal procedures. Pay attention to any speed issues, internet traffic, additional installations, preferences manipulation, so you can react as soon as possible.

You should block any changes that SmashTab wants to make and block any promotional pop-up ads when they appear on the screen for you. You might allow toolbar installs, bookmark, browsing history, search setting permissions without noticing, so keep security tools and run those as often as experts[3] recommend. Make sure to repair the functions of your device using FortectIntego.

Keeping the machine clear of PUPs can improve the speed and performance

If you pay attention to content that you end up seeing online, you can avoid cyber threat installations and make sure to keep the machine free of viruses. There are various pages and promotional sites that can automatically trigger installs, so you should rely on proper programs and visit only trustworthy platforms.

Also, every freeware installation process can affect the machine if you skip through steps and do not choose the proper options like Advanced or Custom. These installation methods allow you to control the process fully, so when the PUP developers include additional applications, you can see them on the list and de-select them if needed.

Internet is a place that has many things, including malicious programs and sites where PUPs can b distributed. You should consider this and never rely on promotional ads or free download pages, torrent platforms.

Terminate any programs related to potentially unwanted programs and uninstall SmashTab Toolbar

You might claim that SmashTab virus affected your device significantly out of nowhere, but there are more ways to get the intruder on the machine. One of them includes torrent sites, downloading licensed versions of programs, or illegal activation tools from pirating or rogue pages.

If you notice the changed appearance of your Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari, or another browser, you should pay close attention and check for intruders using proper security tools. If you do so, and the programs get indicated on the list, make sure to remove SmashTab as the tool suggests.

How to prevent from getting browser hijacker

Protect your privacy – employ a VPN

There are several ways how to make your online time more private – you can access an incognito tab. However, there is no secret that even in this mode, you are tracked for advertising purposes. There is a way to add an extra layer of protection and create a completely anonymous web browsing practice with the help of Private Internet Access VPN. This software reroutes traffic through different servers, thus leaving your IP address and geolocation in disguise. Besides, it is based on a strict no-log policy, meaning that no data will be recorded, leaked, and available for both first and third parties. The combination of a secure web browser and Private Internet Access VPN will let you browse the Internet without a feeling of being spied or targeted by criminals.

No backups? No problem. Use a data recovery tool

If you wonder how data loss can occur, you should not look any further for answers – human errors, malware attacks, hardware failures, power cuts, natural disasters, or even simple negligence. In some cases, lost files are extremely important, and many straight out panic when such an unfortunate course of events happen. Due to this, you should always ensure that you prepare proper data backups on a regular basis.

If you were caught by surprise and did not have any backups to restore your files from, not everything is lost. Data Recovery Pro is one of the leading file recovery solutions you can find on the market – it is likely to restore even lost emails or data located on an external device.
