Stop Notifications virus Removal Guide

What is Stop Notifications virus?

Stop Notifications is a browser hijacker that might show up on your browser out of nowhere

Stop NotificationsStop Notifications virus is a browser hijacker that can affect Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or another web browser

Stop Notifications virus is yet another potentially unwanted program that users typically install unintentionally by many users. Once installed, the app would change the new tab and homepage URL to stopnotifications.com and redirect all user searches to Bing. Additionally, all the search results would be filled with sponsored links and ads, which would provide developers financial benefits via a pay-per-click scheme.

While browser hijackers are not inherently considered to be as malicious as other types of computer infections (Trojans, ransomware, backdoors, etc.), they usually possess qualities that serve minimal to none benefit to the end-users. Their whole goal is to hijack users' searchers, provide sponsored content, and track their online browsing activities, later sharing this data with other parties. Hence, security experts[1] recommend immediate Stop Notifications removal.

Name Stop Notifications virus

Optional steps Computer infections can cause significant damage to system files or disrupt normal settings. To revert these changes and remediate the OS, perform a full system scan with FortectIntego repair software

The reason why browser hijackers are so widespread is because of their deceptive distribution techniques. While many PUPs can be downloaded from official sources such as Chrome Web Store, it does not mean that such apps are useful for the end-user. All it means is that the extension has passed the security checks from Google (although previous examples have shown that many malicious apps are capable of slipping in).[2]

In all other cases, which happen most commonly, users install the Stop Notifications virus in one of the following two methods:

  • Download it along freeware from third-party sites (bundling)
  • Get tricked by fake update and fake virus alert prompts.

Regardless of whether you install the app intentionally or not, it is highly recommended to remove Stop Notifications browser hijacker to break free from its redirects, ads, and other disturbances. In fact, some users might find it hard to find relevant information due to excessive links.

Initially, when looking at the hijacker's name, it implies that it prevents push notifications from being shown on Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, MS Edge, or any other browser that it is installed on. However, it does not differ much from any other similar apps, such as SmashTab, HDSportSearchs, or StreamSiteSearch.

All of these potentially unwanted programs aim to be advertised as useful tools that can enhance the web browsing experience by providing better results quicker. They also often include additional features, such as a digital clock, a random wallpaper, links to most popular sites, etc. However, Stop Notifications does not provide any “better” search results but instead fills them with ads. It will also not prevent notifications from being shown as the extension does not provide such functionality.

Stop Notifications virusStop Notifications virus is a potentially unwanted application that redirects all searches to Bing

To make matters worse, Stop Notifications hijacker also tracks users' online behavior with the help of cookies, web beacons, and other tracking technologies. The gathered data includes IP address, ISP, device's technical details, installed apps, etc. In the privacy policy, it is stated that the PUP also shares these details with third-parties:

<…>the Company may share information it accepts or collects from Users. For example, the Company may share User’s information in order to provide Users with certain content which the Company or other third parties may think will be of interest to the User (such content may be provided either by the Company or by other third parties at its choice).

You should not hesitate to perform Stop Notifications virus removal, as there are no reasons to keep it. For that, you should access your web browser setting and eliminate the extension. Then, scan the machine with SpyHunter 5Combo Cleaner, Malwarebytes, or another anti-malware. If something more dangerous was found, we also recommend using FortectIntego to fix virus damage.

Ways to avoid browser hijackers and other potentially unwanted programs

Potentially unwanted programs are called so for a reason – they are barely desirable. Nonetheless, there are plenty of similar useless apps that prey on users' inability to distinguish between useful features and those that are artificial. For example, Browser hijackers often boast about providing users the ability to change the background wallpaper of the homepage or the inclusivity of links to popular sites such as YouTube.

The truth is, all modern web browsers have to do that without the PUP being installed on the system – all users have to do is access the settings and customize them as they please. By avoiding unwanted apps, users would not only avoid unexpected browser changes, search redirects, ads, and data tracking but also potentially dangerous websites that they are more likely to encounter if infected.

To avoid potentially unwanted apps, always read up on what you are downloading – check forums, blog posts, or reviews – it only takes a few minutes. Besides, you should be wary when downloading freeware from third-party sites, as it is almost always comes bundled with something else. Choose the Advanced/Custom option instead of Basic/Recommended to stay in control of the installation process from start to finish.

Stop Notifications distributionStop Notifications can be downloaded from the official sources, although many find it on their browsers after the installation of freeware

Also, ignore all the notifications on various websites that urge you to update Flash Player or download a “malware removal” tool that is meant to delete fake viruses that were seemingly “detected.” Always visit official websites to update/download software. On a side note, you do not need Flash – it is a flawed and outdated plugin that will be discontinued by 2021.[3]

Control the information that can be accessed by government any other unwanted party and surf online without being spied on. Even if you are not involved in illegal activities or trust your selection of services, platforms, be suspicious for your own security and take precautionary measures by using the VPN service.

Backup files for the later use, in case of the malware attack

Computer users can suffer from data losses due to cyber infections or their own faulty doings. Ransomware can encrypt and hold files hostage, while unforeseen power cuts might cause a loss of important documents. If you have proper up-to-date backups, you can easily recover after such an incident and get back to work. It is also equally important to update backups on a regular basis so that the newest information remains intact – you can set this process to be performed automatically.

When you have the previous version of every important document or project you can avoid frustration and breakdowns. It comes in handy when malware strikes out of nowhere. Use Data Recovery Pro for the data restoration process.
