Wiot ransomware is a particular infection that overwrites the commonly used files to have the reason for a ransom

Wiot ransomware

Wiot ransomware is a virus capable of affecting a large number of files just to later make a blackmail message addressed to the victim. The encryption[1] can start immediately after the infiltration, so the person whose files get altered cannot notice anything but the encoded files and a message demanding the payment. The file-locking process is pretty quick, so if you got the ransom note _readme.txt placed on the desktop and in other folders, your files are already corrupted. This is the threat from the Djvu ransomware family that is known for being very active for years and offering no decryption options for victims.

Wiot is the latest ransomware in this family. It encrypts victim’s files and renames them by appending .wiot extension to their filenames. The appendix gets placed after the original filename and the type of data. You can see which files are unopenable and marked using the extension easily. The virus then provides contact information in its ransom note. The family is known for infecting computer networks worldwide starting in 2018 and having no decryption tools available since 2019.

Name Wiot virus
Type Ransomware, file-locker, crypto virus
Family Djvu/STOP ransomware
Appendix .wiot
Ransom note _readme.txt
Ransom amount $980 or $490 if you pay in 72 hours from the initial infection
Distribution Files with virus payload can be distributed via pirating platforms, torrent sites. Also, malware spreads using file attachments from spam emails
Contact information manager@mailtemp.ch, managerhelper@airmail.cc
Elimination The system gets properly cleaned when anti-malware tools get employed
Data recovery Options are limited because decryption tools take a long time to develop. Data recovery software can help you, a particular media file repair application is also capable of recovering some of the encoded files. Other solutions depend on your backups because it is the best fix for encryption- replacing files with free copies
Repair You can solve the problem with your PC performance by running the FortectIntego application that finds and fixes any system file issues

It was previously possible to get your files back when the threat managed to infect the machine. However, these newest versions like Efdc, Lqqw, or Hoop are not having such a possibility. Of course, it is still good to check if Emsisoft’s decryption tool is working on files affected by the Wiot virus. That strongly depends on the offline vs. online ID forming method.

If ransomware is able to connect with its command and control server, it generates random Online keys for each computer it infects. Since no two computers have the same key, decrypting files requires cooperation from the cybercriminals that hold your data hostage. However, sometimes when a new variant of ransomware encrypts your files using offline IDs it is possible to get one key and recover many files for others. Otherwise, there’s nothing we can do because those servers don’t respond to anything anymore.

If you have infected your computer with one of the Djvu variants, you should try using Emsisoft decryptor for Djvu/STOP. It is important to mention that this tool will not work for everyone – it only works if data was locked with an offline ID due to malware failing to communicate with its remote servers.

Wiot virus

Even if your case meets this condition, somebody from the victims has to pay criminals, retrieve an offline key, and then share it with security researchers at Emsisoft. As a result, you might not be able to restore the encrypted files immediately. Thus, if the decryptor says your data was locked with an offline ID but cannot be recovered currently, you should try later. You also need to upload a set of files – one encrypted and a healthy one to the company’s servers before you proceed.

  • Download the app from the official Emsisoft website.
  • After pressing Download button, a small pop-up at the bottom, titled decrypt_STOPDjvu.exe should show up – click it.
  • If User Account Control (UAC) message shows up, press Yes.
  • Agree to License Terms by pressing Yes.

  • After Disclaimer shows up, press OK.
  • The tool should automatically populate the affected folders, although you can also do it by pressing Add folder at the bottom.
  • Press Decrypt.

From here, there are three available outcomes:

  1. Decrypted!” will be shown under files that were decrypted successfully – they are now usable again.
  2. Error: Unable to decrypt file with ID:” means that the keys for this version of the virus have not yet been retrieved, so you should try later.
  3. This ID appears to be an online ID, decryption is impossible” – you are unable to decrypt files with this tool.

File-locking malware peculiarities

To receive a 50% discounted decryption tool developers promise, victims must contact the attackers within 72 hours after the ransomware installation. Victims can do this using manager@mailtemp.ch and managerhelper@airmail.cc email addresses with an encrypted file attached for proof of ownership to decrypt one file.

However, this option is never recommended. You might not get the tool or files recovered, but instead, receive the malicious file with another virus in place of help. Paying the ransom is never advised by experts[2] because this can easily end up in permanent data loss and financial losses.

As written in the _readme_txt ransom note, the virus encrypts images, databases, documents, and other files with a strong encryption algorithm that cannot be broken by law enforcement agencies such as the FBI unless they pay the ransom amount in Bitcoin.

Once a computer is infected with malware, its system is changed to operate differently. For example, an infection can alter the Windows registry database, damage vital bootup, and other sections, delete or corrupt DLL files, etc. Once a system file is damaged by Wiot virus or another malware, antivirus software cannot do anything about it, leaving it just the way it is.

Therefore, we highly recommend using a one-of-a-kind, patented technology of FortectIntego repair. Not only can it fix virus damage after the infection, but it can also remove malware that has already broken into the system thanks to several engines used by the program. Besides, the application can also fix various Windows-related issues that are not caused by malware infections, for example, Blue Screen errors, freezes, registry errors, damaged DLLs, etc.

  • Download the application by clicking on the link above
  • Click on the ReimageRepair.exe
  • If User Account Control (UAC) shows up, select Yes
  • Press Install and wait till the program finishes the installation process.
  • The analysis of your machine will begin immediatelyReimage scan
  • Once complete, check the results – they will be listed in the Summary
  • You can now click on each of the issues and fix them manually
  • If you see many problems that you find difficult to fix, we recommend you purchase the license and fix them automatically.Reimage results

Virus removal is not the same as virus file recovery

You may think that deleting the ransomware is best, but it’s probably not. At first. It is usually a bad idea to delete the ransomware. The natural instinct of most users is first to remove it as quickly as possible, and that can be wrong in many cases.

In order for researchers to figure out what happened, they need the executable file itself, so deleting the data will make this job much more difficult if not impossible – disabling or quarantining would work just fine, though! You can store some files like this on an external drive before cleaning the system fully.

However, it takes time for researchers to develop the proper decryption tool, so you may wait for a long time until the possibility becomes available. You better get the application like SpyHunterCombo Cleaner or MalwarebytesMalwarebytes and fully remove the Wiot ransomware infection. These AV detection-based[3] tools are the best for such a job because files related to this malware can get removed properly.

Wiot file-locking threat

Note that scanning the machine with an anti-malware tool, any other security software, and eliminating the virus itself is not the same as decrypting these files that the Wiot ransomware virus encodes. File recovery is more difficult and requires additional help from third-party software. It is especially difficult when there are no files backed up in the cloud or un-affected external devices.

Since many users do not prepare proper data backups before being attacked by ransomware, they might often lose access to their files permanently. Paying criminals is also very risky, as they might not fulfill the promises and never send back the required decryption tool.

While this might sound terrible, not all is lost – data recovery software might be able to help you in some situations (it highly depends on the encryption algorithm used, whether ransomware managed to complete the programmed tasks, etc.). Since there are thousands of different ransomware strains, it is immediately impossible to tell whether third-party software will work for you.

Therefore, we suggest trying regardless of which ransomware attacked your computer. Before you begin, several pointers are important while dealing with this situation:

  • Since the encrypted data on your computer might permanently be damaged by security or data recovery software, you should first make backups of it – use a USB flash drive or another storage.
  • Only attempt to recover your files using this method after you perform a scan with anti-malware software.

Install data recovery software

  1. Download Data Recovery Pro.
  2. Double-click the installer to launch it.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to install the software.Install program
  4. As soon as you press Finish, you can use the app.
  5. Select Everything or pick individual folders where you want the files to be recovered from.
  6. Press Next.
  7. At the bottom, enable Deep scan and pick which Disks you want to be scanned.Select Deep scan
  8. Press Scan and wait till it is complete.
  9. You can now pick which folders/files to recover – don’t forget you also have the option to search by the file name!
  10. Press Recover to retrieve your files.Recover files

Remember that the Wiot file virus is one of the many dangerous threats that focus on blackmail and money extortion. Malicious software can be distributed using emails, fake software updaters, certain Trojans, questionable download sources for downloading programs (and files), and cracking tools. These are the most common ways to spread the particular Djvu virus family versions.

Emails are used to deliver malware by including a malicious attachment or link in them. It would help if you kept anti-malware tools like SpyHunterCombo Cleaner or MalwarebytesMalwarebytes to have this additional layer of security when malware tries to access the system. Antivirus programs can also indicate insecure attachments on emails and help avoid direct cryptovirus infection this way.

Password-protected ransomware may have a hidden payload that will delete and overwrite encrypted files after a certain amount of time. If you want to recover these files, create an unencrypted backup first. We also recommend keeping the software updated on your computer, so it’s easier for decryptors to crack open password protection later on. You can remove the Wiot ransomware yourself and recover those affected pieces. The further guide lists all additional tips and tricks that you may need and should benefit from.
