discord_game_sdk.dll: Discord's game library or a planted copy?

discord_game_sdk.dll is the library of the Discord Game SDK, which games ship in their own folders to show Rich Presence, post invites and use the Discord overlay. A copy inside a game you installed from an official store is normal. A copy anywhere else, or in a game from an unofficial download, needs checking before you trust it.

Discord library: safe in a game's install folder

A discord_game_sdk.dll in the install folder of a game you got from an official store is the game's own copy of Discord's library. It is not a process: the game loads it to talk to the Discord app. Every game that uses the SDK has its own copy, so finding several of them is expected.

The genuine copies carry no company name or description in their version resource, so the file says almost nothing about itself. That makes the folder and the source of the game the deciding checks. A copy in Downloads, Temp or AppData, or in a game from a free download site, is not vouched for by anyone.

What discord_game_sdk.dll does

Discord describes the Game SDK as the kit that helps developers build a third-party game or app and integrate it with Discord. The developer adds discord_game_sdk.dll to the game, and the game calls it to reach the Discord app on your PC: to show what you are playing in your status, to post invites that friends can use to join, and to work with Discord's built-in overlay. The library does nothing on its own and does not start by itself.

Because the file is a library that a game loads from its own folder, the risk is not the name but the copy. Windows loads a DLL from the program's folder before most other places, so a file with a trusted name placed where a program will load it runs with that program's rights. Attackers use this kind of DLL hijacking with many names. A discord_game_sdk.dll you did not get with a game you trust is a file of unknown origin, whatever its name says.

About .dll files. A .dll file is a library: it cannot run on its own and is loaded into a program's process. It does not appear in Task Manager under its own name; Process Explorer shows which process loaded it.

Same name, different story: the folder and the game it belongs to decide.

How to check a copy of discord_game_sdk.dll

Four questions decide it: where the file is, which game it belongs to, where that game came from, and what sits next to it. A library never shows in Task Manager under its own name, so use these checks.

  1. List every copy and where it sits. Copies inside the install folders of games from Steam or another official launcher are normal, one per game that uses the SDK. Look closer at copies in Downloads, Desktop, Temp, AppData, or a folder with no game in it.
Get-ChildItem -Path C:\ -Filter discord_game_sdk.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime
  2. Match the copy to a game. Open the folder that holds the file. A game's .exe and data folders next to it mean the file belongs to that game. Check that the game appears in the library of the launcher you use; if no launcher knows it, find out where that game came from.
  3. Read the version resource and the signature. The catalogue copies of the genuine file leave company and description empty, so empty fields are not a warning sign here. Fields that name another company or product are. Look at the signature too and note who signed it; we could not confirm whether Discord signs every build, so a missing signature alone does not prove a fake.
    (Get-Item "C:\path\to\discord_game_sdk.dll").VersionInfo | Format-List CompanyName, FileDescription, FileVersion; Get-AuthenticodeSignature "C:\path\to\discord_game_sdk.dll" | Format-List Status, SignerCertificate
  4. Look at what sits next to it. A game folder holds the game's own files. A discord_game_sdk.dll alone in a folder with an unknown .exe, a script or an archive, or one that appeared the same day as an installer you did not trust, is the pattern of a planted library.
  5. Compare the size and checksum. Use the file check on this page. The catalogue copies range from about 240 KB to about 3.8 MB. A match identifies a known copy; no match is not proof of a fake, because many genuine builds are not listed. For a game from an official launcher, the launcher's repair decides: it replaces any file it did not ship.

A clean result for discord_game_sdk.dll clears only that one file. It says nothing about the .exe, installer or other files of a game from an unofficial download, which is where malware from such downloads is usually found.

Five checks for a discord_game_sdk.dll copy: folder, game, source of the game, neighbours and checksum
The file says almost nothing about itself, so the checks look at where it sits and where it came from.

Check your discord_game_sdk.dll

Choose the discord_game_sdk.dll you are unsure about. Its SHA-256 and SHA-1 checksums are calculated in your browser and compared with the 4 versions of the file known from a public DLL catalogue.

The file stays on your computer. Nothing is uploaded: the checksum is computed locally.

Do you need discord_game_sdk.dll?

Keep every copy inside the games you installed from an official store: without it the game does not start. A copy that failed the checks above came with something you got elsewhere, and the safe way out is to remove that program or game, not only the DLL.

  1. Leave the games you trust alone. A copy in a game's install folder belongs to that game. If it is damaged or flagged, the game's launcher restores the game's own copy; deleting it only stops the game from starting.
  2. Uninstall a game or program that did not come from an official source. Open Settings, Apps, Installed apps, find it and uninstall it. Free downloads often have no uninstaller: then delete the whole folder, not only discord_game_sdk.dll.
  3. Delete a copy that belongs to no game. A discord_game_sdk.dll in Downloads, Temp or AppData with no game next to it is not used by anything you installed. Note its path, delete it, and scan before you trust the PC again.
  4. Run a Microsoft Defender full scan. Open Windows Security, Virus and threat protection, Scan options, Full scan. Quarantine what it finds. Look at Protection history afterwards for anything found in Downloads, Temp or AppData.
  5. Run the offline scan. Some malware hides while Windows runs. The offline scan restarts the PC and scans before Windows starts. It takes about 15 minutes.
    Start-MpWDOScan
  6. Change passwords if you ran an installer you did not trust. Malware bundled with free game downloads is often an information stealer that takes saved browser passwords and session cookies, Discord logins included. Change passwords from a clean device and sign out of other sessions.

Known versions of discord_game_sdk.dll

A public DLL catalogue lists 4 versions of discord_game_sdk.dll, from 0.0.0.0 to 0.0.0.0, by Unknown. Its copies are uploaded by users and not verified, so a checksum match identifies the version, while the digital signature tells you whether the file is genuine. Even a genuine file clears only the file, not the folder: attackers ship genuine libraries next to a program they abuse, so where the copy sits still decides whether it is safe.

Questions people ask

Is discord_game_sdk.dll a virus?

No, the genuine discord_game_sdk.dll is Discord's library that games ship for Rich Presence, invites and the overlay. A copy in the install folder of a game from an official store is the game's own. A copy outside any game folder, or in a game from a free download site, is of unknown origin and needs the checks on this page.

Why is discord_game_sdk.dll flagged in a game I bought?

Detections sometimes hit genuine game libraries. If the file sits in the install folder of a game from an official launcher, repair the game in that launcher: it replaces the file with the one it shipped. Then report the detection to the maker of your security program as a false positive.

Why does discord_game_sdk.dll show no company or description?

The copies collected in a public DLL catalogue leave the company and description fields empty and report version 0.0.0.0. So an empty Details tab is what the genuine file looks like too, and it cannot clear or condemn a copy. The folder, the game it belongs to and where that game came from decide.

Can I delete discord_game_sdk.dll?

You can, but the game it belongs to may stop starting, because it loads the library at start-up. Deleting it from a game you trust gains nothing. If you found it outside any game folder, or in a game you no longer trust, remove that game or file and run a Microsoft Defender full scan.

Is discord_game_sdk.dll part of the Discord app?

No. The library is part of each game that uses the Discord Game SDK and sits in that game's folder. It talks to the Discord app on your PC, but the app does not install it for games, and a copy in Discord's own folders or in Windows is not where games load it from.

Why are there several copies of discord_game_sdk.dll on my PC?

Each game that integrates the Game SDK ships its own copy, 32-bit or 64-bit and in the release it was built with, so several games mean several copies of different sizes. That is by design. What matters is that each copy sits in the folder of a game you installed from a source you trust.
