Is Windows 8 more vulnerable to external threats in comparison with 8.1 or 10, or are the third party Anti-Malware/ Spyware/ Firewalls enough to neutralize them regardless of the OS? A zeroday exploit should be as dangerous, regardless of the OS being used, considering all programs are supported and updated?

The newer versions of Windows are more secure than previous ones. Therefore, Windows 8 is less vulnerable than Windows 8.1. It goes without saying that Windows 10 offers better privacy and security protection than all of the older versions. As a proof and example, we can remind WannaCry ransomware attack last year which hasn't affected any of Windows 10 machines. Each of the OS version offers new technologies and techniques to add extra security.
Additionally, Microsoft ends Mainstream support for Windows 8 this year. It means that no security updates or patches will be provided to the users unless some major cyber attack would occur. Hence, you should not wait until something bad happens and upgrade to the latest OS version.
Talking about general computer's security, it's definitely important to keep all programs up-to-date. However, adding extra security layer is still needed. Windows has built-in security and firewall. Though, they are not enough. It's recommended to use antivirus that offers real-time protection and anti-malware software for maximum security.
