My Mac was infected by searchmine.net browser hijacker. I couldn’t manually remove it wand was forced to use (and pay for) combo cleaner which is quite expensive. is there another way to prevent this?

Browser hijackers and adware is a growing problem for Mac users, and sometimes it might be difficult to eliminate.
While using Combo Cleaner and other anti-malware software is the easiest and quickest way to remove potentially unwanted programs from Mac, manual elimination is also available. However, moving the unwanted app into the Trash is rarely enough, as its traces keep performing its browser changing activities.
First of all, a full browser reset is recommended to remove all the cookies and other changes made by the hijacker. Secondly, the following sections within the macOS should be checked for traces of the PUP:
- /Library/LaunchAgents;
- /Library/Application Support;
- /Library/LaunchDaemons.
Additionally, potentially unwanted applications might also create a profile on the Mac systems. To make sure no additional profiles were made, please go to Settings > General, scroll down and click on Profiles.
