Something really suspicious is going on my computer system! Suddenly all my files became inaccessible, and they were renamed, too. By the way, I have found a notepad file, which said that I have to pay 0.5 Bitcoin via Tor browser in order to get my files back. I believe it is a virus, can you please tell me what I have to do to recover my files? They are very important to me and I just cannot lose them now…
Files are locked, and have .locky extensions now. Is this a joke?!

Thank you for your question regarding Locky ransomware. Unfortunately, your computer was infected by one of the most dangerous computer viruses, and there is hardly anything you can do to recover your files now. Locky virus is malicious software, which runs processes that can detect and encrypt almost all file types. The encrypted data becomes inaccessible and worthless because you cannot open or use it anymore. You have a few choices how to act now:
1. Pay the ransom to the cyber criminals and expect them to give a decryption key for you (NOT RECOMMENDED);
2. Remove Locky malware from your system and try to restore the files on your own.
Unfortunately, there is no Locky decryptor created yet. Therefore, it is not possible to entirely decrypt data that was encrypted. However, there are some tools that MAY help you to recover the files; you can try to use them if you want. However, the only way to restore your files is to import them from a backup drive, if you had such one.
Remember that when you decide NOT to pay the ransom, you should remove Locky virus from your system immediately.
Please read this article to find out what tools can be used to restore the encrypted data and also how to remove Locky from your computer for good.
