Is BestBackground Toolbar safe? Why it is flagged

From our report of Jun 2015 · not reviewed since

What is BestBackground Toolbar?

BestBackground Toolbar is distributed as a free tool enabling family ancestry search, family tree building, family member search and other service related to family and its relationships.

However, our team has initiated a research on it and found out that it might be used for promotion of third-party websites. Despite the fact that it might provide some useful features, the cons of it should make you think twice before installing this browser extension to your PC.

Once installed, BestBackground app may not only install a toolbar on each of your web browsers (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer) but also replace your default start page, search provider and a new tab window with search.myway.com or another version of Ask Search. Are you going through this experience right now?

We advise you to avoid using this search engine because it may cause BestBackground redirects to affiliate websites. Besides, it may install tracking cookies and continuously transmit your search terms, and websites accessed, interaction with ads, IP address, PC's location and similar information to third-party advertisers who may later prepare customized advertisements and flood your browser with them.

Nevertheless, despite being non-malicious, BestBackground redirects can make you visit questionable third-party websites that may be filled with doubtfully reliable content. It is not surprising why the developers of this toolbar claim that they are not going to be liable for any damage you may experience while exploring the content of such sites:

Do you want to visit such doubtful web sources? If not, you should get rid of this questionable toolbar as it seems to be hardly useful. To learn how to remove it, study the BestBackground Toolbar removal instructions that are provided on page 2.

How can I install BestBackground Toolbar?

Even though BestBackground Toolbar can be downloaded from the official website, it may show up on your computer right out of the blue.

No, that does not mean that this browser extension infiltrates the computer without your permission. You may install this browser add-on if you tend to install free software not attentively enough.

For instance, if you click the 'Next' button all the time and do not read a single notification on the installation setup, you may accidentally agree to install BestBackground Toolbar and other unfamiliar apps. Sometimes free programs are distributed as attachments to other free apps, but you can always find information about them in the 'Terms of Use' document on the installation setup.

In order to prevent installing unexpected programs, you should always opt for Advanced/Custom installation option, read all the terms step-by-step and opt out of 'additional components.' You may notice a notification saying: "I agree to install BestBackground Toolbar" or "I agree to set search.myway.com/Ask.com as my default search provider," so make sure that you uncheck it.

These mentions fully fulfill each of the requirements of FTC.

How to uninstall BestBackground Toolbar

How to remove BestBackground Toolbar

Uninstall it, then remove what keeps it starting with Windows.

Nothing it flagged needs fixing.

  1. Step 1: Uninstall BestBackground Toolbar

Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Sort the list by install date and find BestBackground Toolbar, then choose Uninstall from the three-dot menu next to it (in Windows 10, click the entry and then Uninstall).

Remove anything else installed on the same day that you do not recognise, because such programs usually arrive together in one installer. If the uninstaller opens a browser page with an offer or a survey, close it: the program is removed either way.

  2. Step 2: Remove it from startup

Whatever BestBackground Toolbar installed usually starts with Windows. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to Startup apps in Windows 11 or the Startup tab in Windows 10, and disable what you do not know, starting with entries that have an empty Publisher column.

Open file location on the right-click menu shows the file, which helps you decide and tells you what to delete later. Disabling is safe: if something you need stops working, switch it back on.

  3. Step 3: Delete the folders left behind

What the uninstaller leaves behind is usually in the user folders. Open File Explorer, switch on View > Show > Hidden items (in Windows 10 View > Hidden items), and go through %LocalAppData%, %AppData%, %ProgramData% and the two Program Files folders.

Sort by Date modified and delete folders that appeared together with the problem and belong to no program you use. Folders with random names that hold .exe, .dll, .js or .ps1 files are the strongest sign.

  4. Step 4: Scan the PC, then run the offline scan

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, run a Full scan and remove everything it finds. Then select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and click Scan now: the PC restarts and scans before Windows loads, which finds files that hide while Windows runs.

Save your work first, because the offline scan takes about 15 minutes. Both scans are built into Windows 11 and Windows 10, and a second scanner from another vendor is a useful extra opinion.

Questions about BestBackground Toolbar

What is BestBackground Toolbar and why is it on my PC?

BestBackground Toolbar is a program that was installed on the PC, most likely together with something else you downloaded. Free software sites and many installers add extra programs on setup pages with pre-ticked boxes, so the extra install looks like your choice even though nobody read the page.

Check the install date in Settings, Apps, Installed apps: the program you installed that day is the probable carrier. If you do not need BestBackground Toolbar, uninstall it. If it belongs to your hardware or to a program you use, search its exact name and publisher first, because drivers and their tools can have unfamiliar names.

BestBackground Toolbar came back after I uninstalled it. Why?

Something else is reinstalling it. Common causes are a second program from the same publisher, a scheduled task that downloads it again, or a browser extension that keeps prompting for it. Sort Installed apps by install date and uninstall each entry from the same day that you did not choose.

Then open Task Scheduler and look in the Task Scheduler Library for tasks with updater-style names that you do not recognise. Check Startup apps in Task Manager too. If BestBackground Toolbar still returns, start Windows in Safe Mode, uninstall it there and run a Microsoft Defender offline scan, which looks for loaders that ordinary scans can miss.

The uninstaller for BestBackground Toolbar keeps asking me to stay. Is that normal?

It is a common tactic, not a technical requirement. Uninstallers of unwanted programs often show discounts, warnings that the PC will be at risk, or a choice between "repair" and "remove" designed to confuse. Choose the option that removes the program completely and decline everything else.

If the uninstaller closes without removing anything, end its processes in Task Manager and try again, or use Safe Mode. Check Installed apps afterwards; if BestBackground Toolbar is still listed, the uninstall did not finish.

BestBackground Toolbar came back after I removed it. Why?

Something reinstalls it:

  • another program from the same bundle
  • a scheduled task that downloads it again
  • a browser extension restored by sync

Look in Installed apps for anything from the same publisher or installed on the same date, and in Task Scheduler for tasks with the program's name or random names.

Remove extensions while signed in to the browser so sync deletes them on every device. Remove everything in one session and restart. If BestBackground Toolbar still returns, a full scan and a Microsoft Defender offline scan usually find the part that brings it back.

Can BestBackground Toolbar see my passwords?

There is no report of that. Unwanted programs make money from ads, offers, data about your browsing or the use of your connection, not from stealing passwords, and the sign reported here is bestBackground Toolbar in the list of installed apps.

That said, a bundle can contain more than one program, and you cannot be sure what else ran on the day it arrived. After removing BestBackground Toolbar, run a full scan in Windows Security.

If it finds a password stealer or a trojan, change your passwords from another device. If the scan is clean and you see no unknown sign-ins, there is no need to change them.

Do I need special software to remove BestBackground Toolbar?

No. Windows has everything needed:

  • Installed apps for the uninstall
  • the Startup list and Task Scheduler for what restarts it
  • Windows Security for a scan afterwards

The steps in this guide take about fifteen minutes. A dedicated tool is a convenience when you would rather not check each place yourself or when the program keeps coming back.

Whatever you use, finish by confirming that bestBackground Toolbar in the list of installed apps is gone after a restart, and avoid downloading removal tools from pages that promote them through scary warnings.

Is BestBackground Toolbar harmful?

It is unwelcome rather than destructive, based on what has been reported: bestBackground Toolbar in the list of installed apps. Unwanted programs like this slow Windows down, use your connection, show offers or change settings, and they make money for their publisher at your expense. The bigger concern is what arrived with them.

Bundled installers often add two or three programs at once, and some of those change the browser or install updaters that fetch more software later. Remove BestBackground Toolbar, then sort Installed apps by date and remove anything else from the same day. A full scan in Windows Security afterwards confirms that nothing more serious came along.

Why does my antivirus call BestBackground Toolbar a PUA or PUP?

These labels mean potentially unwanted application or program. They are used for software that is legal but uses deceptive distribution, aggressive ads, misleading claims or a hard removal. Microsoft's PUA categories include advertising software, bundlers, download managers, torrent clients, marketing software and miners.

A PUA detection is a warning, not proof of infection, and you decide whether to keep BestBackground Toolbar. Other vendors use their own labels for the same idea, such as PUP.Optional or not-a-virus. Read more in our guide to potentially unwanted programs.

Why can't I uninstall BestBackground Toolbar?

Usually because it is still running or because a helper reinstalls it. Close it from the notification area first, then end its process in Task Manager and try Settings > Apps > Installed apps again. If there is no uninstall entry, look for a folder under Program Files or AppData with the same name and an uninstaller inside.

If the program comes back after removal, the cause of bestBackground Toolbar in the list of installed apps is a scheduled task, a startup entry or the program it was bundled with. Remove those, restart and check again. Starting Windows in Safe Mode stops most helpers and makes stubborn programs easier to remove.

Will Fortect remove BestBackground Toolbar?

Fortect scans Windows for malware and unwanted programs and repairs the system files and settings they change, and its free scan shows what it finds on your PC before you decide anything.

For BestBackground Toolbar, follow the plan above as well: the browser steps take back permissions and settings that no scanner treats as a threat, and uninstalling the program that brought it removes the source.

Run Microsoft Defender's full scan and, if anything was found, its offline scan as a second opinion. If the symptoms are gone after the plan and both scans are clean, there is nothing more to do.
