freeclients.net: fake Minecraft client downloads tagged SilentNet, and what to do if you ran one of the .jar files on Windows

freeclients.net is a website that offers free cracked Minecraft clients, and URLhaus lists 15 of its download files (.jar, tagged SilentNet) as malware, all added on 23 September 2026.

If you only saw the name, nothing is proven; if you ran one of these .jar files on a Windows PC, treat your Minecraft, Microsoft and Discord logins as taken: change them from another device, then scan and clean the PC or reset Windows.

Facts checked October 17, 2026. Removal steps tested on Windows 11 (26H2) and checked against Microsoft's and the browser makers' current documentation.

Facts checked on 17 October 2026 against the URLhaus data for freeclients.net held in our database (the abuse.ch pages themselves only showed a verification screen to our tool), RDAP, one plain request from our server, and published material by Check Point Research, Bitdefender, tria.ge, Joe Sandbox and Microsoft community answers.

Some of these pages were read through search excerpts, so quoted details are marked as described by the source. We did not download the files and we infected no PC; the removal steps follow Microsoft's pages and were not tried on a live infection.

What freeclients.net is, and what we know about it

freeclients.net is not a program on your PC. It is a website whose title, in our request on 17 October 2026, read Free Minecraft Clients, Download Cracked PvP Clients (Meteor, Krypton, ThunderHack). The abuse.ch project URLhaus lists 15 files from its downloads folder as malware. We found no public write up of this one address, so this page separates what URLhaus shows, what we saw ourselves and what researchers have published about the same tag.

  1. 1

    What URLhaus lists

Fifteen file addresses under /downloads/ on freeclients.net, each ending in .jar. The names are those of well known Minecraft clients and cheats, for example meteor-client-1.21.5-54.jar, KryptonClient1.21.11.jar, ThunderHackClient-1.20.4-1.21.11.jar, SakuraClient-1.20.4.jar and Astralux.jar. All 15 were added within six seconds on 23 September 2026 (about 07:23 UTC) by one reporter, and all carry the threat label malware_download and the tags jar and SilentNet.

  2. 2

    What the tag means

SilentNet is a label that malware analysts and sandbox services attach to trojanized Minecraft mods. Public sandbox reports we found describe it as a Fabric style mod that steals the Minecraft session token, downloads and runs further payloads and keeps itself running. These are automated and community analyses of other samples, not a vendor write up, and we could not open the 15 files ourselves.

  3. 3

    What we could not confirm

We did not download any file, so we cannot say which of the 15 files really contain the code, whether the names on the site still point to the same files today, or what each one does. URLhaus shows tags, not proof. We also do not know whether the site owner made the files or whether a copy was swapped in without the owner knowing.

  4. 4

    What this means for you

If you only saw the name in a log, a blocked request or a search result, you are not infected by that alone. The risk belongs to a PC where someone downloaded one of these clients and started it with Java. All 15 addresses are marked offline in our data, which means the files were not downloadable from those paths when URLhaus last checked. A person who downloaded one before that is still at risk.

What freeclients.net (SilentNet, Minecraft client .jar files) does on an infected PC

What we checked on 17 October 2026, and what we could not

Our check was one plain request from our server to https://freeclients.net/. It was not a browser visit, we clicked nothing and we downloaded nothing. That clears nothing: a plain request cannot show pop-ups, redirects after a click or what a download button does.

Our check, 17 October 2026

  • The site answersHTTP 200, no redirect, served through Cloudflare. The page title reads Free Minecraft Clients, Download Cracked PvP Clients (Meteor, Krypton, ThunderHack). The word cracked in the title of a page that offers downloads is itself a warning sign, because cracked software is a common carrier for malware.
  • Notification requestThe page text did not mention a browser notification request in this one request. A plain request does not run scripts, so this is weak evidence.
  • URLhaus listing15 .jar files in /downloads/ tagged jar and SilentNet, all added 23 September 2026. All marked offline in our copy of the data.
  • Downloads and the files themselvesWe did not download any file and we did not click any button on the page. We cannot tell you what the download buttons serve today, or whether they use the same /downloads/ paths.
  • Why offline files do not make the site safeA file marked offline is a path that did not answer when checked. Operators move files, rename them or serve them only to some visitors. The home page being up shows that the site is still running.

Dangerous: do not run clients from this site Our request was a single plain request, so it proves nothing either way. The rating comes from the 15 URLhaus reports and from the fact that the site distributes cracked game clients, not from our test. Do not download or run anything from it.

freeclients.net from registration to today

The domain is about nine months old and all the reports come from one moment. The dates come from RDAP and the URLhaus data we hold; times are UTC.

  1. 15 January 2026

    The domain is registered

RDAP shows freeclients.net registered on 15 January 2026 through Cloudflare, Inc. The only status flag is client transfer prohibited, which is a normal lock and says nothing about the owner.

  2. 23 September 2026

Fifteen .jar files are reported in six seconds

Between 07:23:18 and 07:23:23 UTC a single URLhaus reporter adds 15 addresses under /downloads/. Every entry has the tags jar and SilentNet. The speed suggests the reporter went through the whole downloads folder with a script or in one session. That is our reading of the timestamps, not something a report says.

  3. After 23 September 2026

    The files go offline

In our copy of the data all 15 entries are marked offline. We do not know when each stopped answering or why: removal by the site, a changed path or a block by the host are all possible.

All 15 URLhaus entries for freeclients.net as we hold them on 17 October 2026.
  4. 17 October 2026

    The home page still answers

Our plain request gets HTTP 200 with the page title about free cracked Minecraft clients. No new URLhaus entries have been added since 23 September in our data.

No refresh of the reports does not mean the danger ended. It means nobody has reported newer files to URLhaus that we hold. If the site still offers downloads, the files behind the buttons could be different from the 15 listed.

How a Minecraft client file can steal an account

A .jar file is a Java program. When you start a client, you start a program with the same rights as you, and nothing in Windows stops it from reading your files. We did not open the 15 files; this is how researchers describe Minecraft mod malware in general, and what sandbox reports say about SilentNet.

Four steps: a cracked client is downloaded from the site, started with Java, the Minecraft session and files are read, and extra payloads are fetched
The chain as vendors and sandbox reports describe it for Minecraft mod malware. We did not see the files on freeclients.net run.
  1. 1

The bait is a free client

Cheat clients such as Meteor, Krypton or ThunderHack are popular with players who want an edge on servers. Meteor Client is a known open source project, and that is part of the problem: a download page can use a famous name for a modified copy. Check Point Research (June 2025) described fake Java cheat mods, called Oringo and Taunahi, hosted on GitHub by the Stargazers Ghost Network and aimed at Minecraft players.

  2. 2

    Java starts the file

The player puts the .jar in the mods folder of a launcher such as Fabric, or double clicks it. Check Point reported that the Java loaders in that campaign ran only on systems where Minecraft is installed, which helps them avoid analysis sandboxes. A modified client also looks normal in game, because it still contains the real features.

  3. 3

The session and files are read

The sandbox reports we found for SilentNet describe stealing the Minecraft session data, that is the username, the player ID and the access token. A stolen token can let someone act as your account without your password. Bitdefender (June 2023) described the older Fractureiser campaign taking cookies and passwords from browsers and Microsoft, Minecraft and Discord logins.

  4. 4

    More code is fetched

The same sandbox reports describe downloading and running extra payloads, hiding as another Java process and starting again with Windows. One summary describes a blockchain based command channel. We could not read the underlying pages in full and treat these details as unconfirmed for the 15 files here.

  5. 5

    The loader can spread

Bitdefender and the Fractureiser research team reported that code in that campaign could infect other .jar files on the PC, so a second mod you trusted could be changed. We do not know whether SilentNet files do this, but it is a reason to check every mod, not only the one you suspect.

The list below is exactly what URLhaus holds for freeclients.net. If you downloaded a file with one of these names, from this site or from a copy of it, treat it as suspect. A file with the same name from another place could be harmless or not; the name alone does not say.

What freeclients.net (SilentNet, Minecraft client .jar files) can steal or download

What a stealer like this can take from a PC

The list below is what the sources say for Minecraft mod malware in general. Not every item is confirmed for the freeclients.net files, because we could not open them.

Reported as possible

  • Minecraft username, player ID and access token
  • Microsoft account login data
  • Discord login data
  • Saved browser passwords and cookies
  • Cryptocurrency wallet data and copied wallet addresses
  • Files from your PC
  • A hidden extra Java process
  • Extra malware downloaded later

What this can cost you

Seeing the name costs nothing. The risks below apply to a PC where a client from this site was started.

  • High

    Your Microsoft account

Minecraft Java accounts are Microsoft accounts. Taking one over can expose your mail, Xbox profile, purchases and any other service that uses the same sign in.

  • High

    Your Discord and other logins

Stealers in this class read browser data and Discord data. A stolen Discord session is often used to message your friends with the same malware, which is how these clients spread.

  • High

    Crypto and money

Wallet files, saved seed phrases and the clipboard replacement trick are named in the Fractureiser write up. Crypto that is sent cannot be brought back.

  • Medium

    Other mods and files

Infected .jar files in other places on the same PC are possible if the code spreads, and more malware can be downloaded after the first file.

  • Medium

    Servers you moderate or own

If you run a server and your PC held server files, panel logins or plugins, treat those as exposed. Server plugins are also .jar files, so the same caution applies to them.

  • Low

Nothing, if you only saw the name

A name in a log, a warning or a search result is not an infection.

What you may notice, and what you may not

Stealers are built to be quiet. The signs below are possible, none is certain, and many victims notice only when an account is taken.

SignWhat it may mean
A second javaw.exe in Task Manager after you closed the gameA sandbox summary of a SilentNet sample describes the file starting itself again as a hidden javaw.exe process. Java running with the game closed is worth a look
A Microsoft sign in alert or a changed security email or phoneSomeone else signed in. Check from another device
Your Minecraft username, skin or capes changed, or items missing on a serverSomeone used your session or account
Discord messages you did not send, with a file or linkYour Discord session was used. This is how the clients spread among friends
A new Startup app or scheduled task you did not makePersistence, described in the sandbox reports for SilentNet. Not confirmed for these 15 files

How to check the PC for freeclients.net (SilentNet, Minecraft client .jar files)

Who can meet this, and how

The people at risk are players who download free or cracked clients, and anyone they share them with. A visitor who only read the page, or a site owner whose pages are fine, is not in this group.

  1. 1

You downloaded a client from the site

The site offers cracked PvP clients with names of real projects. If you downloaded and started one of the 15 listed files, you are the main case.

  2. 2

A friend or a server sent you a .jar

Check Point describes the Stargazers network as running fake repositories, and sandbox reports show the same file names on several sites. A file sent in Discord or a clan chat can be the same file.

  3. 3

You found the name in a log or a scanner

If our /check tool or a scanner showed you this name, the question is whether any device on your network asked for it. A router or DNS log shows only that a device asked, not that a file ran.

  4. 4

You own the site or run a similar one

If you own freeclients.net, or a site that looks like it, and you believe your files are clean, the listing may mean a file on your server was replaced or hosted by someone else. Check your files against clean copies from the original project, review who can upload, rotate your passwords and ask URLhaus to look again once the files are cleaned. We cannot tell from outside which case it is.

Check your PC before you delete anything

Start with one question: did you ever start a .jar from freeclients.net? If yes or not sure, do the checks below. None of them deletes anything.

While you check, do not log in to banking, mail or Discord on this PC. If the answer is clearly no, you can stop here.

  1. 1

    Disconnect first

Turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable. A stealer that is still running needs the connection to send data out or to fetch more code.

  2. 2

    Find the files

Open the Minecraft launcher folder (press Win + R, type %appdata%\.minecraft and press Enter) and look in mods. Write down the names of every .jar and when it was added. Also look in Downloads for the names in the table above. Do not open them.

  3. 3

    Look at Task Manager

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc with the game closed. On the Processes tab, look for javaw.exe or Java(TM) Platform SE binary. Java running while Minecraft is closed is worth a closer look. Right click it and choose Open file location to see where it started.

  4. 4

    Check what starts with Windows

Open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off nothing yet; just write down anything you did not install, especially names that look like Java or a random word. Then press Start, type Task Scheduler and look in Task Scheduler Library for tasks that run javaw.exe or a script from your user folder.

  5. 5

    Open Protection history

In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history, look for anything Defender blocked or quarantined around the day you downloaded the client. A detection there is useful; no detection clears nothing, because new stealers are often not caught on the first day.

  6. 6

Check your accounts from another device

From a phone or a different PC, open your Microsoft account sign in activity, your Discord login devices and your email. Look for sign ins you do not recognise. This is quicker than any file check and tells you if the data was already used.

  7. 7

A scan helps, but it does not clear the PC

A scan with Microsoft Defender or another product can find known files. Treat a clean result like a clean site test: one data point. No vendor we found publishes a removal procedure for these files, and we did not infect a PC, so the order below is our judgement, not a tested result.

How to remove freeclients.net (SilentNet, Minecraft client .jar files)

How to remove freeclients.net

A loader's job is to install other malware, so treat the PC as infected with more than one program until the scans are clean.

  1. Step 1: Delete scheduled tasks that bring it back

Open Task Scheduler from the Start menu and click Task Scheduler Library. Select each task you do not recognise and read the Actions tab:

    • a task that starts a file in %AppData% or %Temp%
    • runs powershell with a long encoded line
    • opens a web address belongs to freeclients.net or a similar program

Right-click such a task and choose Delete, and check the subfolders too. Leave tasks from Microsoft, your PC's maker and programs you use. Task Scheduler is the same in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Task Scheduler Library with a task selected and its Actions tab showing the program it starts
Windows 11: Task Scheduler Library, the task selected, the Actions tab shows the file it runs.

Full procedure with screenshots: Remove what malware leaves behind in Windows

  2. Step 2: Remove it from startup

Whatever freeclients.net installed usually starts with Windows. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to Startup apps in Windows 11 or the Startup tab in Windows 10, and disable what you do not know, starting with entries that have an empty Publisher column.

Open file location on the right-click menu shows the file, which helps you decide and tells you what to delete later. Disabling is safe: if something you need stops working, switch it back on.

Full procedure with screenshots: Stop apps from opening at startup On uGetFix

  3. Step 3: Delete the folders left behind

What the uninstaller leaves behind is usually in the user folders. Open File Explorer, switch on View > Show > Hidden items (in Windows 10 View > Hidden items), and go through %LocalAppData%, %AppData%, %ProgramData% and the two Program Files folders.

Sort by Date modified and delete folders that appeared together with the problem and belong to no program you use. Folders with random names that hold .exe, .dll, .js or .ps1 files are the strongest sign.

Full procedure with screenshots: Remove what malware leaves behind in Windows

  4. Step 4: Scan the PC, then run the offline scan

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, run a Full scan and remove everything it finds. Then select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and click Scan now: the PC restarts and scans before Windows loads, which finds files that hide while Windows runs.

Save your work first, because the offline scan takes about 15 minutes. Both scans are built into Windows 11 and Windows 10, and a second scanner from another vendor is a useful extra opinion.

Windows Security Scan options with Microsoft Defender Antivirus offline scan selected
Windows 11: Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

Full procedure with screenshots: Run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan

  5. Step 5: Change passwords from another device and sign out other sessions

Assume that the passwords saved in this PC's browsers, and the accounts that were open in them, are known to the attacker. From a phone or a clean computer, change the e-mail password first, then banking, shopping, social and gaming accounts.

Use each service's option to sign out of all other sessions, because stolen cookies keep a session open even after a password change. Turn on two-step verification on each account. Wait with the infected Windows 11 or Windows 10 PC until the scans are clean.

If you use a Mac, Linux, an iPhone or an Android phone

A .jar file is not tied to Windows, but the details we found describe Windows victims. Do not run the Windows steps on another system.

Your deviceWhat we knowWhat to do
Mac or LinuxJava runs there, and Bitdefender called Fractureiser multi-platform. We found no report that says the 15 files here run on those systemsIf you started one of these files, treat it like Windows: change passwords from another device and check what starts at login
iPhone or iPadJava Edition clients and .jar files do not run on iOSNothing to remove for this threat. If you typed a password into a suspect page, change it
AndroidJava Edition .jar clients do not run on stock Android. We found no source saying otherwiseNothing to remove for this threat. Change passwords if you entered any

After removal: passwords, accounts and prevention

If you ran one of the files: protect what was taken

The PC is one half. The other half is every account that was open or saved on it. The order matters: another device first, then the PC.

Five steps in order: disconnect the PC, change passwords from another device, run a Defender Offline scan, remove the mods, reset Windows if unsure
The order of actions if a client from this site ran on a PC. This is our judgement from Microsoft's pages, not a tested result.
  1. 1

Change passwords from a clean device

Use a phone or another PC. Start with the Microsoft account used for Minecraft, then email, Discord, banking and any exchange. Microsoft community answers suggest removing unknown recovery emails and phone numbers, turning on two step verification and using the sign out everywhere option. Do not change passwords on the PC you suspect.

  2. 2

    Sign out all sessions

A stolen token or cookie can still work after a password change if the session stays open. In your Microsoft account and in Discord, sign out of all devices, then sign in again only on clean ones.

  3. 3

If you cannot get into your Microsoft account

Use Microsoft's own account recovery form and give as many true details as you can, such as old passwords and when the account was created. Forum helpers cannot reset anything for you. Contact Minecraft Support through the official help site if a username change or lost items need to be reversed.

  4. 4

Move crypto first if a wallet was on the PC

If a seed phrase or wallet file was ever stored or copied on the PC, assume it is known. Create a new wallet on a clean device and move the funds there. Check the address before sending, because some stealers swap copied addresses.

  5. 5

    Run Microsoft Defender Offline

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Microsoft Defender Offline scan and select Scan now. Save your work first: Windows signs you out and restarts, and the scan takes about 15 minutes. Results are under Protection history.

  6. 6

Remove the client and the mods you cannot vouch for

Delete the files you wrote down from the mods folder and Downloads. Because the code may change other .jar files, reinstall Minecraft mods only from the projects' own pages, Modrinth or CurseForge, and download them again instead of copying them from the old folder. Remove unknown items under Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

  7. 7

If you are not sure, reset Windows

At Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC, Remove everything wipes the PC and is the answer that does not depend on finding every piece. Keep my files keeps personal files but removes apps and settings. Back up documents first and restore them by hand, not whole folders of programs or mods.

  8. 8

Tell your contacts and your server

If your Discord sent files or links, tell your friends not to open them. If you run a server, change panel and host passwords, rotate keys and check plugins against the original downloads.

  9. 9

Watch your accounts for a few weeks

Check card statements, exchange logs and sign in alerts. Turn on alerts wherever they exist.

Keep a PC out of this kind of chain

The malware here depends on one choice: running a program from a site that offers cracked versions. Most of the advice below comes from the Fractureiser and Stargazers write ups.

Do

  • Download mods and clients only from the project's own page, Modrinth or CurseForge, and check that the page is the one the project links to.
  • Keep the game, Java and Windows updated, and keep Microsoft Defender on.
  • Use two step verification on your Microsoft account and Discord.
  • Use a separate account or a spare profile for testing new mods.
  • Keep a backup of your worlds and documents on a disk that you unplug.
  • Show file endings in File Explorer so you see what you are opening.

Don't

  • Do not download cracked, free paid or hacked clients from sites that sell nothing and show no maker.
  • Do not run a .jar that a stranger or a chat sends you.
  • Do not turn off antivirus because a client asks you to.
  • Do not reuse your Microsoft password anywhere else.
  • Do not rely on a quiet scan to say that you are safe.

Questions about freeclients.net (SilentNet, Minecraft client .jar files)

What is freeclients.net?

It is a website that, in our request on 17 October 2026, was titled Free Minecraft Clients, Download Cracked PvP Clients (Meteor, Krypton, ThunderHack).

URLhaus, the malware tracking project run by abuse.ch, lists 15 files from its downloads folder as malware, all added on 23 September 2026 and tagged jar and SilentNet. It is not a program on your PC. We did not download the files, so what they contain is not confirmed by us.

Is freeclients.net safe?

We would not use it. URLhaus lists 15 of its .jar downloads as malware, and the site offers cracked clients, a category that often carries stealers. Our own check was one plain request that returned HTTP 200, which proves nothing about the download buttons.

All 15 listed addresses are marked offline in our data, but the home page still answers, and files can be replaced or moved. Download clients only from the project's own page, Modrinth or CurseForge.

What is SilentNet?

SilentNet is a tag that analysts and sandbox services use for trojanized Minecraft mods. Public sandbox reports on tria.ge and Joe Sandbox describe such a mod stealing the Minecraft session token, downloading and running more payloads and keeping itself running.

We found no detailed vendor write up of the family, so treat these details as reports on other samples, not a confirmed description of the 15 files on this site.

I only visited the site. Am I infected?

Not from the visit alone. The listing is about the .jar downloads, and the danger starts when a file is saved and started with Java. If you did not download or run any file, there is nothing to remove.

If you are unsure, check your Downloads folder and the mods folder for the file names in the table on this page, and look at your Microsoft account sign in activity from another device.

I ran one of the files. What do I do first?

Disconnect the PC, then change your Microsoft, Discord, email and banking passwords from another device and sign out of all sessions. A stolen game token or browser cookie can work even after a password change if the session stays open.

After that run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan, delete the client and mods you cannot vouch for, and reset Windows with Remove everything if you are not sure.

Can a Minecraft client steal my Microsoft account?

Yes, it can try. A client or mod is a Java program with your rights. Bitdefender described the Fractureiser campaign taking Microsoft, Minecraft and Discord account information and browser cookies, and sandbox reports on SilentNet describe stealing the session token.

A token can act like a login. That is why changing passwords from another device and signing out everywhere matter more than only deleting the file.

Is the real Meteor Client a virus?

Not by our reading. Meteor Client is a known open source project, and a fake copy on another site is what URLhaus flagged here. A famous name on a download page proves nothing, since a copy can be changed.

We did not compare the file to the original, so we cannot say how the copy differs. Get Meteor or any other client only from the project's own page and never from a site that calls its files cracked.

Does this affect Mac, Linux, iPhone or Android?

A .jar runs on any computer with Java, so Mac and Linux players could be reached, and Bitdefender called the older Fractureiser malware multi-platform. The reports we read describe Windows victims, and we found nothing that says these 15 files run elsewhere.

Java Edition .jar clients do not run on iPhone or stock Android. If you started one on a Mac or Linux PC, change your passwords from another device and check what starts at login.

Will resetting Windows remove it, and are my accounts safe afterwards?

A reset with Remove everything wipes programs, mods and startup entries, which is the answer that does not depend on finding every piece. It does not undo what was already taken.

Passwords, session tokens and crypto seed phrases that the stealer saw stay exposed until you change them from another device and turn on two step verification. Restore documents by hand, and download mods again from their own pages.

Will Fortect remove freeclients.net?

Fortect scans Windows for malware and unwanted programs and repairs the system files and settings they change, and its free scan shows what it finds on your PC before you decide anything.

For freeclients.net, follow the plan above as well: the browser steps take back permissions and settings that no scanner treats as a threat, and uninstalling the program that brought it removes the source.

Run Microsoft Defender's full scan and, if anything was found, its offline scan as a second opinion. If the symptoms are gone after the plan and both scans are clean, there is nothing more to do.
