StartNow Toolbar: what it is and how to remove it
StartNow Toolbar is an old browser toolbar by Zugo that set startnow.com as the start page, changed the search engine and ran ToolbarUpdaterService.exe in the background. Uninstall it from Windows, stop its updater service, then reset the search engine and start page in each browser.

Low risk today This was one check of two domains on one day, without a browser. The StartNow service is gone, so a new install is unlikely. The risk that remains is an old copy still on a PC: an updater service that runs at every start, an Internet Explorer add-on, and a parked domain as the start page. Parked pages can change what they show by country, device or visit, so a quiet result clears nothing.

The registry record gives this date. An archived copy from January 2009 shows a different site under the name, "StartNow, The Smarter Choice", signed StartNow International Ltd. We found no source that ties that company to Zugo.

The About page of zugo.com, archived in February 2017, says Zugo was established in 2008 to sell search based products to software and web publishers: branded start pages, branded toolbars and the Zugo StartNow Toolbar.

The archived start page carries a "Powered by the Zugo Start Page Platform" badge. Its web search went to Ask.

The toolbar download page
about.startnow.com offered a free download for Windows XP, Vista and 7, Internet Explorer 6 or later and Firefox 3.0 or later, "Powered by Bing's decision engine". Chrome was not on the list.

Users find it next to a Yahoo start page
A Firefox user on Mozilla Support found the StartNow toolbar with a Yahoo home page and a search page in every new tab. It was not in the Firefox add-ons list. It went away only after uninstalling StartNow in the Windows Control Panel. The same month a user log on Tech Support Forum lists the "Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar" service, its file dated 27 July 2011.

A Zugo company in London is dissolved
Companies House lists Zugo Services (UK) Limited at 21 Bedford Square, London, dissolved on this date. The same address is given for Zugo Ltd in a software publisher listing. The toolbar business itself went on: zugo.com still offered it in 2017.

Our August 2017 report on Yahoo StartNow captured startnow.com with a Yahoo search box. Its support page said StartNow Start was owned and operated by Zugo Ltd and that most users got it from "our software products or our partner's software products".

The last working copies
The last archived copy of the StartNow start page is from 14 September 2017, with Bing as the engine for every search type. The copy of 3 October 2017 returns a server error. The last archived Zugo home page is from September 2017 as well.
September 2018
Firefox stops running old toolbars
Mozilla says no supported Firefox version runs legacy add-ons after Firefox ESR 52 ended on 5 September 2018, and old add-ons were taken off its add-on site in October 2018. Toolbars built the StartNow way stopped working in Firefox.

Internet Explorer is retired
Microsoft ended support for the Internet Explorer 11 desktop app on this date and has since disabled it on many Windows 10 versions. Windows 11 does not include it. That was the other browser the toolbar was built for.

Which browser shows the ads?
Set another search engine
Open Settings > Search engine, click Change next to the search engine used in the address bar and pick the one you want. Then open Manage search engines and site search and delete any StartNow or Yahoo StartNow entry you did not add.

Reset Chrome

Set another search engine
Open Safari > Settings > Search and choose a different Search engine. In Settings > General, set your own Homepage.
Remove extensions you do not recognize
In Safari > Settings > Extensions, select anything you did not install yourself and click Uninstall. StartNow Toolbar was made for Windows, so on a Mac look for whatever extension changed the start page.
Check the Mac for apps from the same download
In Finder > Applications, move anything you did not install on purpose to the Trash. In System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions, remove unknown items, then empty the Trash.
Then, whichever browser you use
Step 1: Uninstall programs you did not mean to install
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10, and sort the list by install date. Look at what appeared around the day the problem started and uninstall every program you do not recognise or did not choose.
Free converters, PDF and video tools, "system optimizers" and unknown browsers are the usual carriers of StartNow Toolbar. If a name is unclear, search for it before you remove it, so you do not uninstall a driver or a Windows component.

Step 2: Scan the PC, then run the offline scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, run a Full scan and remove everything it finds. Then select Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) and click Scan now: the PC restarts and scans before Windows loads, which finds files that hide while Windows runs.
Save your work first, because the offline scan takes about 15 minutes. Both scans are built into Windows 11 and Windows 10, and a second scanner from another vendor is a useful extra opinion.

Remove the program, its updater service and its leftovers

Uninstall StartNow Toolbar
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 (Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10). Search for StartNow, click the three dots and choose Uninstall. Sort the list by install date and remove anything else added the same day. If User Account Control asks, click Yes (Uninstall a program or app in Windows On uGetFix).

Check the updater service
Press Win + R, type
services.mscand press Enter. Look for "Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar" or "Updater Service for AMZN". If it is still there after the uninstall, open it, click Stop and set Startup type to Disabled. Then rerun the uninstall or the scan below. - 3
Check startup apps and scheduled tasks
Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable any StartNow or Zugo entry. Then open Task Scheduler and look in Task Scheduler Library for tasks with those names. Right-click and Disable one only when its action points to the StartNow Toolbar folder.

Delete the folder
After a restart, open

Scan, then scan offline
Run a Microsoft Defender Full scan, then the Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan). The free program that brought the toolbar may have brought other extras too.
After removal: keep your search engine and start page
Do
- Choose Custom or Advanced setup in every installer. It shows the optional components that Quick setup hides.
- Untick every box that offers a toolbar, a new start page or a new search engine.
- Download programs from their makers' sites or the Microsoft Store, not from download portals.
- After installing free software, check each browser's start page and search engine once.
- Keep a current backup of your files with File History or OneDrive.
- A VPN hides your IP address from the sites you visit on public networks; it does not remove hijackers.
Don't
- Click through Quick or Recommended setup without reading each screen.
- Leave a pre-ticked check mark that says you want to install a toolbar.
- Keep a toolbar or start page you do not remember choosing.
- Ignore an unknown service or process such as
ToolbarUpdaterService.exe.

What is StartNow Toolbar?
StartNow Toolbar is a browser toolbar made by Zugo Ltd for Internet Explorer and Firefox. It added a search box and shortcut buttons for Facebook, shopping, games, travel and weather. On install it set startnow.com as the start page and changed the search engine to its partner, which was Ask, then Yahoo, then Bing over the years.
It mostly came bundled with free programs, ticked by default in the installer, and it ran a Windows service called Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar. Security tools classed it as a potentially unwanted program. The service behind it stopped in late 2017, but old copies can still sit on a PC.
Is StartNow Toolbar a virus?
No. StartNow Toolbar is a potentially unwanted program and a browser hijacker, not a virus. It does not spread on its own, encrypt files or steal passwords, as far as any source we read says. ESET named its files Win32/Toolbar.Zugo, potentially unwanted application, and Malwarebytes flagged its updater as a PUP.
The problems it caused were a changed start page and search engine, slower browsers, sponsored results and an updater service running at every start. Our readers told us in 2015 that it froze their computers. You do not need to panic, but you should remove it, together with anything installed on the same day.
What is ToolbarUpdaterService.exe and can I delete it?
ToolbarUpdaterService.exe is the updater of StartNow Toolbar, and yes, you can remove it. It runs as the Windows service Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar from C:\Program Files (x86)\StartNow Toolbar.
File.net lists the same file name for Zugo's Amazon Browser Bar and EazelBar, where the service is called Updater Service for AMZN. It is not a Windows file and Windows does not need it.
Do not delete the file by hand while it runs. Uninstall StartNow Toolbar in Settings > Apps > Installed apps first. If the service is still listed in services.msc, stop it, set it to Disabled, then delete the folder after a restart.
How do I remove StartNow Toolbar from Windows 11 or 10?
Uninstall it like a normal program, then clean the browsers. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, search for StartNow and choose Uninstall; in Windows 10 the list is under Apps & features. Restart and open services.msc to check that Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar is gone.
Delete the StartNow Toolbar folder in C:\Program Files (x86) if it remains. Then set your own start page and search engine in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and remove extensions you did not add.
Finish with a Microsoft Defender full scan and the offline scan. Internet Explorer, where the toolbar mostly lived, is retired, so there is nothing to reset there.
Why does startnow.com or Yahoo StartNow open as my home page?
Because the toolbar, or the installer that brought it, set it. StartNow Toolbar changed the start page of every supported browser to startnow.com, which showed a Yahoo search box around 2015 and a Bing one in 2017. Since 2022 the address has been a parked domain, so today you may see a blank page, an error or a parking page.
Changing the home page back works only once the program is gone, because it can put the setting back. Uninstall StartNow Toolbar first, then set your start page under On startup in Chrome or Edge and under Home in Firefox. Check the browser shortcut too: remove startnow.com from its Target field.
Does startnow.com still work in 2026?
No. On 7 October 2026 startnow.com pointed to an address of Bodis, a domain parking company, and did not answer our fetch within 15 seconds. Archived copies show the StartNow start page working until 14 September 2017 and a server error on 3 October 2017. From December 2022 the address shows a parking page.
The domain itself is still registered until 2027, so it could come back under someone else's control. That is one more reason not to keep it as a start page. If a browser still opens it, remove the toolbar and set your own start page.
Who made StartNow, and does Zugo still exist?
Zugo Ltd made it. Its website described a business set up in 2008 that built branded toolbars and start pages for software publishers, with search from Bing, Yahoo and Ask and payment per install. A UK company, Zugo Services (UK) Limited at 21 Bedford Square, London, was dissolved on 29 October 2013, while zugo.com kept selling toolbars until 2017.
The last archived Zugo home page is from September 2017, and today zugo.com has no website. We found no reliable source on what became of Zugo Ltd after that. A company called ZUGO LTD registered in 2023 has a different address, and we found nothing linking it to the toolbar.
Is Searchstartnow.com the same as StartNow Toolbar?
No, as far as we can tell. Searchstartnow.com is a separate search page that our 2023 report covered. The page in that report carries an Ask Media Group copyright line, and we found no link to Zugo or to the old StartNow Toolbar.
It arrives as a browser extension in Chrome or Edge, not as a Windows toolbar program with an updater service. If your browser opens Searchstartnow.com, open chrome://extensions or edge://extensions and remove anything you did not install, then set your search engine and start page again. If it is startnow.com or a StartNow bar, follow the steps on this page.
StartNow keeps coming back after I uninstall it. What now?
Something on the PC is putting it back. First open services.msc and check for Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar or Updater Service for AMZN; stop it and set it to Disabled.
Then look in Task Manager > Startup apps and Task Scheduler for StartNow or Zugo entries. Uninstall every program installed on the same day as the toolbar, because the free program that carried it can reinstall its extras.
Check the browser shortcut's Target field for startnow.com. Run a Microsoft Defender full scan and the offline scan. As a last step, reset each browser to its default settings, which turns off extensions and restores the start page and search engine.
