The vague Windowsdefender.site web page can point you to dangerous external sites

Ads by Windowsdefender.site

Windowsdefender.site is a deceptive site that can redirect you to various scam sites[1]. The download links available on hxxp://windowsdefender.site/download/download.php/ suggest installing “Insight 2.5” update for Windows 7 users.

However, clicking on the download link points the victim to an insecure URL shortening site that displays an ad before rerouting the user to a final website.

Our researcher discovered that Windowsdefender.site redirects the victim to a site that says:

Your system is heavily damaged by (4) virus!

If such message appeared on your screen, you should quit the associated website immediately and not click on anything. Clicking on the deceptive ad can immediately download a rogue system optimizer[2] to your computer or trigger a redirect to another scam site. In case one of such scam sites asks you to provide any personal details about yourself – step back and never visit that site again.

If you care about your privacy, you need to find the program that causes redirects to Windowsdefender.site so frequently. Sites that this suspicious web page can redirect you to can be highly untrustworthy or even malicious.

The reason why your browser automatically loads that site and causes various redirections is that it was infected with adware program that is set to advertise all kinds of suspicious websites.

There are numerous adware programs that might be responsible for causing these redirects. Thus, we suggest you to remove Windowsdefender.site ads using anti-malware software, for instance, Reimage. Alternatively, you can use adware removal instructions provided down below.

Distribution of ad-supported programs

Ad-supported and potentially unwanted programs are typically promoted with the help of software promotion technique known as software bundling. This method allows software developers spread less popular programs in tandem with more popular ones.

When installing a new computer program, you should pay attention to details provided in its installer. If it suggests installing any additional programs, you should refuse to do so. In most cases, these bundled programs are nothing more than pesky spyware-type programs that slow down the activity of your computer and display highly bothersome advertisements.

To drop off unwanted programs, we suggest choosing Custom/Advanced settings for software installation and deselecting all suggested extras. VirusActivity[3] reveals that software bundles distribute thousands of potentially unwanted programs daily, so be extremely careful with every program you download from the Internet!
