NemoWeb data breach

3,472,916 accounts · breached September 4, 2016

This is a spam list: a collection of addresses used for sending bulk email. Being in it mainly means more spam and phishing. No account of yours was necessarily broken into.

What happened

In September 2016, almost 21GB of data from the French website used for "standardised and decentralized means of exchange for publishing newsgroup articles" NemoWeb was leaked from what appears to have been an unprotected Mongo DB. The data consisted of a large volume of emails sent to the service and included almost 3.5M unique addresses, albeit many of them auto-generated. Multiple attempts were made to contact the operators of NemoWeb but no response was received.

What to do if you had an account

  1. Turn on two-step sign-in. Enable two-factor authentication where the service offers it, preferably with an authenticator app or a passkey. A leaked password alone is then not enough to get in.
  2. Expect targeted phishing. Leaked contact details are used to write convincing fake messages that mention the breached company or your real name. Do not click links in unexpected emails or texts about this account; go to the site by typing its address.
